Obituary for Ferdinand Joseph Kuemper

Worthington, MN

     Ferdinand (Ferdie) Joseph Kuemper, 85, of Worthington, died Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Veteran’s Memorial Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
     Ferdie was born May 10, 1926 near St. Kilian, MN. He attended St. Kilian Catholic School. He moved to Worthington with his parents Joseph and Christina Kuemper in 1941. In 1943, he went to work for Worthington Creamery and Produce which later became Campbell Soup Co. There he met and married Evelyn Joyce Oldenkamp. They were married in 1954 at St. Mary’s Catholic Churchdd of which they were faithful members for 57 years.
     He served in the U. S. Army, 2nd Infantry Division, for 4 years. He entered the service January of 1949 and served in the Korean War from 1950-1951. He was honorably discharged in 1953. He retired from Campbell Soup in 1988 after 45 years working as a truck driver.
     During his retirement he loved woodworking; making beautiful decorations and helping his children with several remodeling projects. He especially enjoyed Bingo and playing cards with his wife and children.
     Ferdie is survived by his wife, Evelyn Kuemper of Worthington; his children: Rhonda (Jeff) Hill, of Norman OK, Greg (Dawn) Kuemper of Estherville, IA, and Lori (Jack) Ratekin of Des Moines, IA; 8 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; 1 brother: Francis (Lorraine) Kuemper of Worthington; 3 sisters: Annie Evans of Sydney NE, Clara (Howard) Todd of Cheyenne, WY, and Helena (Bob) Stoner of Bismarck, ND: 3 sister-in-laws: Pat Kuemper, Aletha Oldenkamp, and Carol Jean Oldenkamp; and several nieces and nephews.
     He is preceded in death by his parents; 1 brother, Thomas Kuemper and 1 sister, Isabelle Lumsden.
     Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Worthington, MN, with Father Jim Callahan officiating. Ferdie’s grandchildren, Joseph Bickford, Erin Bickford, Daniel Bickford, Adam Kuemper, Brian Kuemper, Kevin Kuemper, Ashley Nelson, and Tyler Nelson will serve as casket bearers. Burial will be held in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery immediately following services. A reception will follow burial services at St. Mary’s.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 30, 2011, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the VA chaplain program would be appreciated.
