Obituary for Michael Ewald Lang

Worthington, MN

Michael Ewald Lang, age 87, was born on July 26, 1927. His father was Michael Sylvan Lang. Michael was raised by his grandfather and grandmother, entering a family of ten in Sleepy Eye, MN.

When Michael was very young, he was a shoe shine boy. Later, he baked and delivered bread and goodies for Haas Bakery, friends of the family. Raised in the Catholic faith, he was an altar boy and soloist by the age of twelve. At sixteen, he hitchhiked to Minneapolis to WCCO to sing on the radio for their Frank Sinatra Contest. He sang “Night & Day”. Still sixteen, he signed up with the Merchant Marine as a cook and then later into the Army to cook for the officer’s club.

Back from the military, he came to Worthington to visit relatives and friends at the Joe Lang and George Haas Bakery. On a blind date with friends, he met and fell in love with Olive Anton. They were married on May 24, 1949, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale.

In 1949, Michael and Olive bought the Crossroads Café, which was originally a school house, and changed the name to Mike’s Spaghetti House. Later the name was changed to Michael’s Steak House Restaurant. He was always perfecting the food he served and he loved to greet each and every customer with a cheery “hello”.

Michael was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion. He was President of the Southwest Minnesota Restaurant Association, sponsored numerous ball leagues like slow pitch and bowling, and gave to many other charities.

Michael is survived by one son, Larry Lang of Worthington and two daughters, Michelle (Gregory) Johnston of Miles City, MT and Linda Lang of Worthington. He was preceded in death by his wife, Olive and all of his immediate family. Relatives remaining in Worthington are Rosemary (Jim) Schissel and family and Charles Lang (Karla) and his family.

On Monday, July 28, 2014, Michael went to be with his wife Olive, in God’s heavenly choir. He is probably singing “In Old Judeah” and sipping the perfect cup of coffee.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 11, 2014, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Worthington, MN, with Father Jim Callahan officiating. Pall bearers will be Craig Anton, Doug Anton, Glenn Classen, Adam McCoy, Pat McCoy, and Bob Munson. Honorary pall bearers will be Charles Lang, John Lang, and Gregory Johnston. Burial, with military rites by the American Legion and VFW, will be in the Worthington Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 10, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.
