Obituary for Charles Gary Ling

Charles Gary Ling, Round Lake, MN, died surrounded by family on Sunday, November 4, 2018, after a hard battle against cancer. Gary was born in Worthington, MN, on May 12, 1940, on Mother’s Day, to Charles and Winifred Ling. He began school in Round Lake, and then moved to Harris, IA, where he attended school until the 10th grade. He moved back to Round Lake and graduated from there in 1958. After graduation, Gary joined the Navy with his good friend, Gary Tjoland. He was stationed in San Diego, Memphis, Corpus Christi, TX, and the Kwajalein and Wake Islands in the Pacific where he did air search and rescue. After the navy, he attended Worthington Junior College and then St. Cloud State University where he started dating the cute girl from his school bus in Harris, Marlis Stofferahn.
Gary and Marlis were married on August 24, 1963. After their marriage, they lived in Osseo, MN, for one year where Gary was a plumber and Marlis was a high school math teacher. Gary and Marlis moved to Worthington and then to Round Lake where Gary joined his father in business. He owned Ling Drainage, and he and Marlis owned and operated Ling’s Apple Orchard for many years. Gary eventually began farming corn and soybeans as well. Two daughters were born to the couple, Lisa Ann and Pamela Sue.
Gary and Marlis loved to travel and see the US, having visited 49 of the 50 states. Gary was active for many years in the Minnesota Land Improvement Contractors Association, serving as President for two years, as well as on the national board of LICA. Over the years Gary and Marlis were blessed to be able to winter in Arizona, Florida, and Texas where they golfed and rode dune buggy through the desert and mountains with their friends from MN and new friends they met along the way.
Gary had many interests including spending time with family and friends, camping, fishing, flying, and was active in his church. He loved oil painting, creating beautiful segmented wood bowls, and loved talking to anyone within earshot. He could build or fix anything.
Gary was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his family. He is survived by his wife Marlis, daughters Lisa (Tim) McClure from Maple Grove, MN and Pamela (Brad) Wendland from Round Lake, MN, grandchildren Kyle Wendland, Kailey Wendland, Amanda McClure, Megan McClure, and Hunter McClure, his siblings Richard (Lucy) Ling, San Diego, CA, Margaret (Tom) Geertsema, Sioux Falls, SD, and Randall (Sharon) Ling, Ocheyedan, IA. Gary is also survived by his Stofferahn family, David (Elizabeth) Stofferahn, Mark (Karen) Stofferahn, Michael (Heidi) Stofferahn, Lynn (Jeffrey) Spessard, and Brian Stofferahn, as well as many nieces, nephews, and good friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Winifred Ling, mother- and father-in-law Wallace and Leona Stofferahn, and sister-in-law and her husband Dianne and Clarence Zylstra.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, November 12, 2018, at 10.30 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Round Lake, with Pastor Robert Bartlett officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 11, 2018, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.
In lieu of flowers, any monetary contributions will be given to the Sanford Hospice Cottage, Worthington, and the American Legion in Round Lake.
