Obituary for Kathleen Elizabeth Lohse

Worthington, MN

Kathleen Elizabeth Clarke Lohse died August 9, 2018 after a brief illness. A daughter of the Southwestern Minnesota prairie, Kathleen lived a full, rich life of 101 years. She is survived by her sister, Betty Bondhus of Worthington, MN; a daughter Carol J Tveit of Avondale Estates, Georgia; three sons: Thomas of St. Paul, MN, Kent of Kerrville, TX and Keith (Cindi) of Windom, MN; eight grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Kathleen witnessed the major historical events of the 20th century: two world wars, 1918 flu pandemic, the Great Depression, the atomic bomb, the Cold War, automobiles, electricity, radio, television, and computers. Farming changed from a family farm supporting a family, corn picked by hand to large farms with huge machines planting and harvesting crops and using herbicides and insecticides to decrease the threats to growth and yield of those crops. She was a true partner to her husband, Louis Lohse. They shared in the work and business of farming seeking new ways to improve their business. Kathleen was one of the first women to teach school after being married and having a child, one of the first women to serve as an elder in her church and presbytery. Her strength, her intelligence, her spirit and her love of a challenge were all qualities that shaped the values that continue to live in her family and guided the choices she made as a volunteer.
She served as a leader in her church and in her community. She was a member of the Eastern Star and PEO. She took census; she worked in a bank to help with college expenses of one of the children. Kathleen loved music. Her family was often called upon to sing at weddings and funerals. She was a gardener. Her family enjoyed “organic food”, before it earned its name.
After farming in Wilmont, Rushmore and Slayton, Kathleen and Louis retired and moved to Worthington in 1979. Education was a high value in this family. As a result each of the four children attended and graduated from college.
Kathleen’s love for her family was fierce. Family visited often and were embraced with good food, a chance to help with a crossword puzzle, family stories, names and dates, the well-being of the church, the kindness of friends and neighbors, community, state and national events. She was an informed citizen and open to new ideas. Her wisdom, welcome, wit, generosity and spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2018, at 2:00 p.m., at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Galen Smith officiating. Burial will be held prior to the service in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church in Worthington.
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
