Obituary for William Merrill Potts

Worthington, MN


     William Merrill Potts, age 90, died on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at the South Shore Care Center in Worthington, MN. He was born on May 27, 1924 to Angeline B. Crowner Potts and William Merrill Potts, Sr. in Mobridge, SD.

      He began college at the University of South Dakota, but his education was interrupted by serving in Europe during WWII. He was stationed in the headquarters in Paris, France. Upon his return home, he continued his education at Yankton College and earned a teaching degree. He began his teaching career in Hoven, SD and later moved to Ruthton, MN where he taught and served as principal. While teaching in Ruthton, he met his future wife, Colleen A. Kienitz. They were married on August 11, 1953 in Amboy, MN.

      After their marriage, they taught in Grants Pass, OR where their eldest son, Steven J. Potts, was born. From there, they moved to Luverne, MN where their daughter, Rebecca, and their youngest son, David, were born.

      They moved to Wells, MN so that Bill could take graduate classes at Mankato State University, and they moved to Worthington in 1962 where Bill taught at the Junior High School until retiring.

      Public visitation will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2014, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN. Monday there will be a private family memorial service.

      Bill is survived by his wife Colleen, his children Steven Potts of Hibbing, MN, Rebecca Potts of Worthington, MN, and David Potts and his wife Connie of Hugo, MN, and by his grandchildren, Michael Potts of Hugo, MN, Kristin Potts of Boston, MA, and Caroline Potts of Hugo, MN.

      Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his four sisters, Angeline Bates, Theodora Elliot, Marion Nash, and Margaret Bormann.


In lieu of flowers, please make donations to either the Manna Food Shelf or to the Scholarship Fund at the First United Methodist Church.


Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
