Obituary for William Hegg Sr.

William Marlin Hegg was born on March 23, 1914 in Bruce, South Dakota. He was the son of Olaf Hegg and Beata Ode Hegg. He attended elementary school at a farm school near the family farm. He attended high school in Brookings, South Dakota and college at South Dakota State University where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in animal husbandry.
     Bill met Marguerite Wells at South Dakota State and they were married on July 3, 1941, in Rapid City. They lived on various Army posts before Bill was shipped overseas in World War IL Their favorite post was Fort Robinson, a remount station, where Bill was in charge of 5,000 horses. Bill loved caring for the horses and they both loved riding the horses on the bluffs and jumping in various horse riding contests.
     When Bill was shipped overseas Marguerite and their first child, Barbara, lived in Aberdeen with Marguerite's parents. Bill served in the European Theatre for 21 / 2 years first with Patton's 9th Armored Division and then in Paris where he was in command of the motor pool on the Champs Elysee for General Eisenhower. Upon his discharge in 1946 with the rank of Major, he and Marguerite came to Worthington, where they had two more children, Bill, Jr. and Sonia. Bill opened both a farm implement business and an automobile agency. Later he became an investment advisor with Edward Jones.
     Bill and Marguerite enjoyed raising their family, working and participating in many activities in Worthington. They were members of and active in First Lutheran Church for 62 years. He was a past president of the Chamber of Commerce and was active in Kiwanis. He enjoyed gardening and playing golf, tennis, and bridge. He loved to travel and enjoyed many trips to various parts of the world. Bill and Marguerite were godparents to a family of Sudanese refugees through First Lutheran Church. They thoroughly enjoyed their church life and their many wonderful friendships in Worthington. Bill was known for his generosity, his deep faith, his sense of humor and love of family.
     Bill passed away peacefully on Monday, March 9, 2009, at Sunset Hospice Cottage. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Ostby (Bryn) of Palo Alto, California, son Bill Hegg, Jr. (Susan) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, daughter Sonia Mockett (Doug) of Palos Verdes, California, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, sister Helga Lampson of Hatfield, Pennsylvania, sister-in-law Clara Hegg of Brookings, South Dakota, and fifteen nieces and nephews.
     Memorial services will be held on Friday, March 13, 2009, at 2:30 p.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with the Rev. Richard Ricker officiating.  Private family burial will be held in the Worthington Cemetery.
 
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
