Obituary for Vyrn Roger Brandt

Vyrn Roger Brandt, age 84, was born to Henry and Mary Brandt on January 26, 1932 in Alpha, MN. He was the youngest of seven children. He was born and raised on the farm in Alpha, which was recently recognized by Jackson County as a Century Family Farm. Vyrn went to school in a one-room school house in District 20 Enterprise Township through the 8th grade at which point he was needed on the farm; he then completed his GED while in the service.
On February 4, 1952 Vyrn was united in marriage to Agnes Lutterman of rural Sherburn, MN. The religious ceremony took place at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Sherburn, MN at which Fr. George Foffel officiated.
This began Vyrn’s legacy as a loving and faithful husband and father. The first of their 10 children was born in 1952. Then he began his service in the Army in 1953 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, from which he was honorably discharged in 1955. Meanwhile, life at home remained active as the 2nd of their children was born in 1954 while he was serving in Germany. Upon his return, Vyrn and Agnes farmed in Alpha from 1955 to 1963, where their next 6 children were born. Then came a move to Reading where they had 2 more children, completing their family in 1969. Vyrn worked on the Reading farm from 1963 to 1971 and was also employed as Assistant Manager at Payless Cashway Lumber in Worthington, which later became UBC. In 1971, he and Agnes and family moved from the Reading farm into Worthington. Vyrn continued working at UBC until his retirement in 1995.
Vyrn and Agnes loved traveling, so in January of 1995 they started traveling south for the winter and started full-time RV-ing in 1999, traveling the US for 10 years before settling down at Homestead in Worthington in 2009. While living in the Worthington area, he volunteered at blood drives, Pioneer Village, St. Mary’s for money count and adoration, and also as a driver for those in need. He was also a member of the Lions Club, American Legion, and Knights of Columbus where he was Grand Knight from 1980 to 1981 and District Deputy from 1984 to 1988. He was also on the Board at Homestead.
Vyrn passed away on January 5, 2017 at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
