Obituary for Virgil "Pete" Vern Peters

Worthington, MN

Virgil Vern “Pete” Peters died on September 3, 2016 at Our House, Hospice of Murray County in Slayton, Minnesota at 92 years of age. He was born on June 8, 1924, in Worthington, Minnesota and grew up in the areas of Bigelow, Minnesota and Little Rock, Iowa. Pete graduated from high school in Little Rock, Iowa, in 1942.
Pete served in the US Army from 1943 to 1945 and was deployed both to the European and the South West Pacific Theater campaigns as a Communications Chief with the 86th Infantry Division. He was a Bronze Star recipient. While on leave from the Army, Pete was engaged to his teenage sweetheart, June Gaiser, while at a dance in Wilmont, Minnesota. The couple married shortly thereafter on June 16, 1945.
Upon returning to the Worthington area in February, 1946, he worked at Booties Hatchery and as an intern at Schaefer’s Meat Market. In February, 1947, he purchased the Bigelow General Store and the Peters’ family returned to Bigelow to live. Pete and June owned the store and butcher shop for 19 years.
In 1966 Pete joined the United States Department of Agriculture as a meat inspector at the Wilson’s beef plant in Cherokee, Iowa. During that time Pete and June lived in Aurelia, Iowa. The family later moved to Hartley, Iowa, while Pete worked at Spencer Foods. Pete continued working as a meat inspector for the USDA until 1989 when he retired after working at Hormel in Fremont, Nebraska.
Pete was a charter member of the American Legion Post 496 in Bigelow, and was a firefighter on the Bigelow Volunteer Fire Department. He was involved with the Boy Scouts, the March of Dimes, Kiwanis and Elks Club, and was a church board member at Bigelow Methodist Church. Pete and June enjoyed playing bridge and square dancing, but their greatest love was spent visiting family and friends and touring every state in the United States in their RV. Winters were spent in warm places such as Florida or Arizona and “home” was where they parked it.
Pete was an only child and is preceded in death by his mother, Jantje “Jennie” Peters, and grandparents, John and Ida Peters, as well as by two cousins he considered siblings, Avis (Bowen) Peters and Jack Peters.
He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, June; daughter Linda (Daniel) Beerman of Iona, Minnesota; son Thomas Peters of Bigelow, Minnesota; son Jeffrey (Jane) Peters of Yuma, Arizona; son Bruce (Angie) Peters of Georgetown, Texas; daughter Julie (Scott) Weber of Logan, Iowa; and son Kent (Susanne) Peters of Blair, Nebraska.
Pete is survived by fourteen grandchildren: Ranell Beerman; Melissa (Ryan) Elder; Mark (Heather) Beerman; Peter (Krista) Beerman; Jenny Peters; Jake Peters; Kirstjen (Josh) Pratt; Shannon (Keith) Klingen; Sarah (Justin) Miller; Katie (Bobby) Morton; Hannah Weber; Molly (Will) Zoellner; Bethany Peters; Carolyn Peters.
Pete is also survived by twenty three great-grandchildren. Many other young people who were closely associated with the Peters’ family also called him Grandpa.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, September 9, 2016 at the Worthington Christian Church, 1501 Douglas Ave., Worthington, MN, with Pastor Scott Weber and Daniel Beerman officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. preceding the funeral at the same location. Lunch and fellowship will follow the funeral, and interment will occur in the afternoon at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Little Rock, Iowa. Military honors will be by the Worthington VFW and American Legion members at the church. Condolences may be sent to the family at: 10753 Knauf Ave, Iona, MN 56141.
Benson Funeral Home is coordinating the arrangements.
