Obituary for Verla Opal Ling

Verla Ling, age 89, was born on October 7, 1926, on the family farm near Harris, IA, the daughter of Arthur and Clara (Frerichs) Rehborg.  She was baptized in October of 1926, confirmed in 1939, and married at Zion Lutheran Church in Horton Township.  Verla graduated from Harris High School as valedictorian of the Class of 1944.  She was involved in cheerleading, girls basketball, band, rollerskating and helped at the library.  Verla married Leo Marvin Ling on June 12, 1949, and they made their home in Worthington.  Verla attended the National Banking Institute in Chicago for classes and training.  She worked at Farmers State Bank in Round Lake for 12 years and at Ling Implement in Worthington.  Verla was a vacation bible school teacher and a Brownie and Girl Scout Troop Leader.  After Leo’s death on October 17, 1981, she became a Hospice volunteer, helped with the Hospital Auxiliary, and worked with home health care. She also took classes at the Worthington Community College. She liked to travel, crochet, and ballroom dance.  Her greatest joy was her family and close friends.  Verla died on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Lakefield, MN.
     Verla is survived by her daughter, Tammy Ling and friend, Dale Ackermann of Round Lake, MN and sister, Maureen and Hank Hellinga of Ocheyedan, IA.
     She was preceded in the death by her husband, Leo; infant son, Darwin; sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Gordy Erler; sister, Marlys Woolridge, and brother-in-law, Jim Leckband.
     Family services will be held on Monday, March 14, 2016, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Mark Schreiber officiating.  Casket bearers will be Gregory Leckband, Douglas Rehborg, Tom Martens, David Westerlund, Dean Ackermann, and Keith Tentler.  Honorary bearers will be Dr. GW Smith, Dr. Keith Erler, Dr. Scott Erler, and Germaine Pershing.  Burial will be in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
