Obituary for Vera Amelia Szalewicz

Worthington, Minnesota

Vera Amelia (Nystrom) Szalewicz, 97, was born on October 8, 1911, to Peter J. and Catherine (Holmberg) Nystrom in Worthington, MN. She attended school in Worthington and was a life long resident except for a brief period. She lived in Ogden, UT and worked in a munitions factory during WWII. She returned to Worthington where she met Stan Szalewicz who was in the Air Force stationed in Sioux Falls, SD. They were married on July 1, 1944.
Vera worked at many local businesses over the years including Morrie Watrud’s Ben Franklin store and Gordy’s Bakery.
Vera retired in 1973 and moved in with her daughter, Mary, and son-in-law, David Von Holtum. She was an enormous help with the children and the home. She enjoyed baking and always kept the cookie jar filled. She made sure there was always a full pitcher of juice in the refrigerator waiting for the kids! She wouldn’t rest until all of the dishes were done.
In 1991 she moved to Okabena Towers where she enjoyed the companionship and activities with the other residents. She maintained her apartment and independence until September 21, 2009, when her health failed. She died peacefully on September 24, 2009, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.
Vera is survived by her only child, Mary Von Holtum of Worthington, MN; her grandsons, Jeff, Joe and Mitchell Von Holtum; her granddaughters, Amy Johnson, Julie Haack, Kerry Von Holtum, and Molly Truitt; three great granddaughters and five great grandsons. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and three brothers, her husband, Stan, in 1959, and her son-in-law and grandson on September 18, 2009.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2009, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Worthington, MN, with Father Larry Brixius officiating.

Memorials are preferred to Epilepsy Foundation, Humane Society of Sioux Falls, Second Chance Rescue or St. Mary’s Church.

Benson Funeral Home is coordinating the arrangements.
