Val Watje, age 73, of Brewster, died Thursday, April 8, 2021, at the Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. He was born September 19, 1947, in Lake Park, IA, to Edward and Prudence (Gerjets) Watje.
Born with farming in his bones, he helped his dad and brothers milk cows and raise crops. He earned his American Farmer’s Degree in FFA and graduated from Round Lake High School in 1965. He attended 2 years at Worthington Junior College. He enlisted in the Army National Guard in Jackson, MN.
Val met a Powers girl from Brewster at his going away party and ended up giving her a ride home and they argued about whether Round Lake was round. The next time he saw her they held hands for 5 minutes and they fell in love. Val & Bev were married October 26, 1968, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brewster, MN. Val & Bev had 3 children, Kim, Neil and Amy. Together they raised crops, pigs, cattle and kids. Val was passionate about his family and Charolais cattle. He was a mail carrier for the Jackson Post Office for 20 years.
Val’s hobbies included bowling, driving around checking crops, showing cattle, baling road ditches, writing “poetry” at district Optimist meetings, going for rides in the side by side and of course doing all of these with Michelob Golden Light.
Val was a devoted and active member in any organization he was a part of. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and was a Lector, Communion Distributor, money counter and a member of the KC’s. He was also a member of the Rock-Nobles Cattlemen Association – serving as their president for a few years, MN Cattlemen’s Association, MN Charolais Association, MN Livestock Breeders Association, and Nobles County 4-H. Most recently, his service passions included the Elk’s Lodge where he served as an officer and gambling manager and he was also awarded Elk of the Year and Officer of the Year, the Optimist Club where he served as president and he was currently Commander of the Round Lake Legion post.
Val was immensely proud of his wife, kids, grandkids, numerous friends and witty sense of humor.
Val is survived by his wife of 52 years, Bev and his three children, Kim Lambert, Worthington, MN; Neil Watje, Lake Park, IA; and Amy Untiedt, Lake Park, IA; seven grandchildren, DJ Lambert, Elly Watje (Nathan Horn), Emma (Toby) Barker, Mylee Watje, Alex, Brody and Devin Untiedt; one Great Grandchild - baby Barker due in July; two brothers Vince (Suzanne) Watje and Galen (Teresa) Watje; sisters-in-law, Carol (Wayne) Nau, Jane Powers, June (Steve) Ray, Patricia Powers; brothers-in-law, Jack Powers (Joni), Chuck Powers, Vincent (Joy) Powers, and Delmar Milbrath and numerous nieces and nephews.
Val is preceded in death by his parents; brother Burton, his mother and father-in-law, several brothers and sisters-in-laws, and two nieces.
