Obituary for Thomas "Tom" Larry Ling

Thomas Larry Ling, age 85, went to see the Lord on July 26th, 2020 at the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington, MN.
Tom was born to Harold and Viola Pittman Ling on April 27, 1935. In 1939 the family moved to the farm in Bigelow Township where Tom would live for the rest of his life.
On November 15, 1953 Tom married Cleo Jones at the Bigelow Methodist Church. The couple moved to the farm where they began farming in partnership with Harold and Viola. Four children were born to them, Brian, Roberta (Bobbie), Brad and Bruce.
Tom loved farming but he had many, many other interests. He took art classes at the Worthington Jr. College and discovered ceramics, from there painting was added and then carvings - most of wood, from trees that grew on the farm and metal sculptures made from farm machinery. Later health issues would make carving and sculpturing too difficult. He turned to agate polishing and designing jewelry. Then he became a master gold wrap designer and began using precious gems. Toward the end of his life he returned to painting. In the early years he served as president of the Nobles Art Center and president of Southwest MN Art Humanities counsel.
Tom was an avid rock hound, collecting rocks where ever he went. He enjoyed star gazing and taught his children the names of the stars, constellations and planets.
Tom was very active within the Bigelow Methodist Church. He taught Sunday school and served on church boards. Tom served on the Bigelow Farmers Elevator board. Tom served six years with the MN National Guard.
Those who remain to remember his goodness and love are his wife Cleo; children, Brian (Michelle) and their two sons - Jeff and Alex (Jasmine) and their son James; Bradley and his children - Julia Ravensmyth, Sam (Haley) and their children, Xavier and Madeline, Heather (Ralph) Webb and their children - Lucas, Natalie and Lincoln; Bruce (April); son-in-law Bruce Martin and son Thomas; siblings, Harold LeRoy (Shirley), Phyllis (Charlie) Middagh, Nancy Jones, Judy Cowan, Evelyn Renken and Ralph Ling; aunt LaVonne Baerenwold and many nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his daughter, Roberta, his parents - Harold and Viola, his father and mother-in-law - George and Tillie Jones, and his brothers/sisters-in-law, Kenneth Jones, Gary Cowan, Arnold Renken and Dave Schroeder, Betty and Lowell Raasch, Donna and George Kanuch, Arlene Johnson, and Susan Ling.
Private family services will be held at a later date at the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
