Obituary for Thomas Edward Walker

Thomas Edward Walker (Wacker was the original family name) was born on February 8, 1931 in Farmington, Minnesota.  His father worked for a company in the cities and his mother helped in the restaurant her parents owned in Farmington.  The family later moved to the country where they had a farm near Hastings, Minnesota.  Thomas's mother passed away on March 19, 1944.  Thomas was only 13 at the time.  His father Anthony moved the family to Round Lake, Minnesota.  Thomas had a fifth grade education. His father had pulled the boys out of school to work after their mother passed away.  He worked for farmers in the area.  He went into the Army during the Korean War.  He was stationed in Elpaso, Texas and then transferred to the camp at Boston, Massachusetts.  His wife Helen whom he married on March 30, 1952 wanted to remain in Boston but Thomas wanted to return to Round Lake where their family was.  His father-in-law Leon gave Thomas and Helen a piece of land where they built their home.  Thomas went to work for Campbell Soup Company.  He worked his way up at the company.  Thomas was a self taught man.  He studied electrical, plumbing and boilers.  He received a license from the State of Minnesota.  He eventually moved into a maintenance position and would at times travel to different locations out of state for Campbell's to repair machinery.  He worked for Campbell's for 40 years.  He would have been there longer but he suffered a massive heart attack at the age of 50.  After he retired from Campbell's he still remained very active.  He did work for many residents of Round Lake doing repair work of plumbing, electrical and mechanical.    He was also a member of the American Legion in Round Lake.     
     He was preceded in death by his father, Anthony; mother, Agnes; brother, Paul, and his wife, Helen.  He is survived by sisters, Betty and Joan; brothers, Roger and Jerome; his three children, Linda Fischenich and her fiance Brian Gimmer of North Mankato, Minnesota, Richard Walker of Pierz, Minnesota, and Michael and Elaine Walker of Round Lake, Minnesota; grandchildren, Brittany, Jamie, Jacob, Nikkole, Malaki, Aaron, and Jessica, and great grandchildren, Charles and Isabelle.      
    Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2009, at 10:30 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Round Lake, MN, with the Rev. Robert Bartlett officiati Burial will be in the Round Lake Cemetery.     
    Visitation will be from 5-8 on Wednesday July 1, 2009 at the Benson Funeral Home
