Obituary for Steven Gordon Johnson

Sibley, IA

Steven Gordon Johnson, age 57, was born on April 12, 1959, in Madison, SD, the son of Gordon and Patricia (Westall) Johnson. He grew up on the family farm and attended kindergarten in Junius and graduated from Madison High School in 1977. Steven graduated from SDSU with a B.S. degree in animal science in 1981. He worked in farrowing barns, a board stud, and animal vaccine labs throughout his career but a majority of his work life was spent on the road and in the fields doing tiling. His favorite job was running the shot clock for the Lady Jay & Bluejay basketball teams which he did for 12 years.
Steve married Roxanne Hayenga on December 31, 1992, and they were blessed with two sons, Vance in 2003 and Owen in 2004. When he was no longer able to work he became a stay at home dad, which was his most rewarding career. He drove the boys to band lessons, piano lessons, Lego League, basketball, baseball, and football games and practices. He also took pride in caring for the pets and trees and lilacs he planted on the acreage.
He was a member of the American Reformed Church in Worthington where he served as an usher, Kid’s for Christ kitchen helper and Sunday school helper. Steve was also a member of the YMCA for many years where he participated in racquetball, 3 on 3 and 5 on 5 league basketball, slow pitch softball, and was on multiple league championship teams. He also participated in fastpitch softball, pool league, dart league, and a fantasy football league. Steve passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, at his residence near Sibley, IA.
