Obituary for Steven Charles Voigt

Bigelow, MN

Steven Charles Voigt was born on March 29, 1951 in Fairmont, MN, the only child of Lloyd and Greta Voigt. He spent much of his childhood on a farm in Villard, MN before the family moved to San Antonio, TX for five years. They eventually settled in Winnebago, MN where Steve played football and graduated from high school. He went to college for two years at North Hennepin Community College. Marrying Patricia Sundberg on December 5, 1970, they moved to the Twin Cities area. Steve and Patty were the owners and operators of Voigt’s Gas and Goods for several years, a gas station and convenience store in Robbinsdale, MN. Following their divorce in 1990, Steve returned to Southwestern Minnesota and established Homelife Waivered Services, an in-home adult care facility in Worthington, MN.
Steve was an avid muskie fisherman, a master angler, and devoted his life to catch and release. Known as “H” to his fellow fishermen, he was a pioneer in the muskie fishing community, and developed several out of the box techniques which have now become commonplace. He also created handcrafted fishing lures and spinnerbaits, first as owner of M&G Tackle and most recently under his own brand “Muskie Machinery Baits”. Steve was a black belt in martial arts and loved to play poker, enjoyed music and history, and loved to debate politics. Steve died peacefully on Monday, February 11, 2013 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
Steve is survived by one daughter, Chelsey (Kyle) Foster, of Minneapolis, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Greta Voigt. He will be dearly missed by his uncle, two aunts, cousins and many dear friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., at the Bigelow Community Church on Maple Street in Bigelow, MN, with Rev. Ron Lammers officiating. Burial will be in the Spirit Lake Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Spirit Lake, IA, next to his mother. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made in the memory of Steve Voigt to the Minnesota Muskie and Pike Alliance, 2076 Copland Rd., Maple Plain, MN 55359, to further the advancement of catch and release, which he was such a huge proponent of. We love you Dad.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at the Bigelow Community Church.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
