Obituary for Sterling Andrew Johnson

Sterling Andrew Johnson was born December 4, 1919 in Walnut Grove, Minnesota. He was the son of Charles and Mary Johnson. He graduated from Pingree High School in 1937. His field of study at Jamestown College was Mathematics, Social Sciences, Physics, and Chemistry. Upon graduation he was inducted into the Army Air Corp where he spent over 3 years serving his country. After the Army, Sterling took a high school teaching position in Wilmot, South Dakota; he taught science, math and music. On June 9, 1946, Sterling married Irene Krantz of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They moved to Worthington, Minnesota where Sterling taught math for two years and became the first driver’s education instructor in Worthington. He attended Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Illinois and graduated in 1950. Shortly thereafter he started Johnson Eye Clinic in Worthington, Minnesota. Sterling has given Worthington many years of service through a number of organizations and his church. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce since 1952 and received their Community Service Award in 1998; he also served one term as a member of the Worthington City Council. For over 50 years he was a faithful member of the Noon Kiwanis Club. He served on the school board of District 518 for 18 years and as a chairman for 5 of those years. His church, First Baptist, has played an important role in his life and that of his family. Seeking to serve, he was a Deacon, Clerk, Sunday School Superintendent, and in 1975 co-chaired the building committee. Sterling was a man deeply devoted to his faith in God, his family and his country. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Irene and his children all living in Minnesota, Roger Johnson (Sharon) of Worthington, Lois Johnson (Gregg) of New Brighton, Mary Campbell (Bruce) of Savage, Wally Johnson (Susan) of Worthington, fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, sister Geneva Tracy of St. George, Utah. He was preceeded in death by his parents, his daughter, Faith; brothers, Warren and Charles Johnson and sister, Anita Falsetta. Visitation will be at Benson Funeral Home on Sunday, May 17 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. On Monday, May 18 there will be a family graveside service at 9:00 a.m. at the Worthington Cemetery, followed by a celebration service at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Worthington with Dr. John Moe officiating. Memorial gifts will be given to Camp Shetek of Slayton, Minnesota. Benson Funeral Home, Worthington, is in charge of arrangements.
