Obituary for Stephen Craig Held

Worthington, MN

Stephen Craig Held, 68, was born in Montevideo, MN, on September 28, 1944, to Shirley L. and Alice T. Held. After attending public schools in Mora, Grove City, Winthrop, and Benson, Steve moved with his family to Worthington in 1962 when his father became Superintendent of Schools. Steve was a student with special needs who accomplished much with his own determination aided by his parents’ devotion and the many fine teachers he had along the way.
In high school, Steve enjoyed music and sports events, especially football and basketball games, both home and away. He was honored to serve as the manager of the basketball team his junior and senior years. He graduated high school in 1964.
After high school, Steve worked for over 30 years in the high school cafeteria where he touched the lives of thousands of students, getting to know many of them by name. He also worked part-time at Sterling Drug. He was quick to extend his hand in greeting to his many friends in the community, and he was known for his smile and witty one-liners. He greatly enjoyed going out for pizza with his friends and walking his dog Misty around the neighborhood. He was a member of American Lutheran Church and an avid church league softball fan, spending many summer hours attending games.
Steve loved to talk sports, watch the Vikings on television, listen to Twins games on the radio and study sports magazines and newspapers. He acquired an extensive and amazing knowledge of teams, players, standings, batting averages and other statistics.
Steve continued to attend most high school games and events with his parents, rarely missing a game over the years. He also enjoyed attending the Boys State High School Basketball Tournament for 30 years. He was honored by being named the Trojan's Most Loyal Fan and also by being inducted into the Worthington High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Steve lived at home with his parents until 2005 when he moved to a CCSI care facility in Worthington.
Steve died peacefully on Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at Ridgewood. He is survived by his sister, Pamela (Paul) Mork of rural Bemidji, niece Erika Mork (Takashi Maie) of Plymouth and nephew Karl Mork of Bemidji. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 24, 2012, at American Lutheran Church in Worthington, with the Rev. Renee Teklenburg officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Casket bearers will be Brad Burnham, Jerry Fiola, Takashi Maie, Karl Mork, Robert Mork and Carl Nagel. Honorary bearers will be Rich Adel and Don Basche. Burial will be at the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
