Obituary for Shirley Marie Zylstra

Shirley passed away peacefully on February 23, 2020, after spending a great day with her family. She was born on August 23, 1943 to Walt and Martha Jandl. She grew up on a farm near Amiret, MN. She later went to country school in a one room schoolhouse along with some of her siblings. In 1961 she graduated from Tracy High School.
On July 11, 1981 she was united in marriage with Ed Zylstra. They lived on an acreage near Brewster, MN for nearly 20 years. Many memories were made over those 20 years. They brought their first daughter, Sara home in 1982 and Lisa in 1984. Every summer Shirley had a very large vegetable garden and canned nearly 100 quarts of fruits and vegetables each year. She also had many beautiful flower gardens and would spend hours tending to them.
Shirley was an amazing stay at home mom while her girls were young. She loved her family and caring for them. As they got older she held a number of jobs, always involving helping or cooking for others. She was known for her cooking and baking skills. She always had a warm home cooked meal on the table and there was never a shortage of cookies or bars and the coffee brewed endlessly at Shirley’s house. She made sure that everyone who came to her house had some coffee and something to eat. If you left Shirley’s hungry, you did something wrong.
Shirley was very excited to become a Grandma when her first granddaughter Hannah was born in 2016 and Nolan followed in 2019. She was thrilled to hear she would have a 3rd grandchild, Baby Girl Moen due in March. She absolutely adored her grandchildren; they were the light of her life.
Shirley’s battle with cancer was short but she fought very hard and she will be missed dearly by many. She is survived by her husband, Ed; daughters, Sara (John) Sackmann of Baltic, SD and Lisa (Frank) Moen of Robbinsdale, MN; grandchildren, Hannah, Nolan, and Baby Girl Moen; her brothers, Jim (Darlene), Bob (Kris), and Charles; sister-in-law, Jan (Larry); brothers-in-law, Cork and Marv (Ellen), and many nieces and nephew, cousins, friends and neighbors.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, March 2, 2020, at 11:00 a.m., at the American Reformed Church in Worthington, MN. Private family burial will be held at a later date.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2020, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN.
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
