Obituary for Samuel Ernest Kenney

Samuel Ernest Kenney was born on March 26, 1930 in Pitcher Oklahoma, the son of Tilton and Florence Kenney. In the mid 1930's the family moved to Cedar County Missouri, sadly Florence died shortly after their arrival. Determined and independent, when Sam was approximately 10, he and his brother Oliver ran away from home to join his brother Cletus in Worthington where Sam found a home, and a place to work on Ray Schmitt's farm. It was here in Worthington that he met his future wife, Phyllis Clark on a blind date. They married on December 1956 and remained married for 45 years, until her death in December 2001.  Shortly after he and Phyllis married, Sam left the Schmitt's to farm on his own.  Hard working and determined he farmed soy beans and corn for himself and under contract with other farmers in the area.  The years of hard work and saving paid off and in 1970 Phyllis and Sam purchased their home on Okabena St. in Worthington.  Sam was good at and enjoyed working with wood; he designed and built the front and side porches on their home and he built his four stall garage from wood he collected dismantling barns.  When Sam was no longer able to stay in his home he moved to Crossroads Care Center where he made many friends with the staff.  Sam was a shy man, if you didn't know him you might think of him as reserved.  Those of us who knew him well knew him to be a gentle man, extremely kind and ready with a smile.  He liked to be outside, and he liked animals; he rescued kittens, took his mother-in-law's dog when she went into a nursing home, and later adopted a cat.  Sam died on August 9, 2016 at Sanford Regional Hospital. He will be missed deeply by all of us who loved him.
Sam is survived by his brother Oliver Kenney of Ceder County, Missouri; his sister Novela Pinkman of Nevada, Missouri; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and close friends.  He is preceded in death by wife Phyllis Kenney, his brother Cletus Watts and his parents.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Benson Funeral Home Chapel in Worthington, Minnesota with Pastor Richard Ricker officiating. Burial will be at the Worthington Cemetery. Casket Bearers were Gene Brunk, Walter Kenney, Rodney Pedley, Jill Pedley, Darol Schmitz, Gordon Varuska, Lisa Wajer, and Jon Wajer.
