Worthington, MN

     Ruth was born July 30, 1922 in Victor, IA to Reverend William and Emma (Ansorge) Ullerich. She was the middle child of five (two brothers and two sisters). At the age of three her family moved to a parish in Van Horne, IA, approximately 30 miles west of Cedar Rapids, IA. Ruth attended grade school and high school there and graduated valedictorian of her senior class. She then went to the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA and graduated with a B.A. degree, with a major in Home Economics and a minor in English.
     Ruth married Kenneth Arthur Hein on May 19, 1946 in Fairbank, IA. She taught in a private school in Long Beach, CA for two years while Ken was stationed there in the Navy. Following their move back to the Midwest she taught for six years in Fairbank and Brandon, IA. Her final twenty teaching years were spent in Decorah, IA - teaching 10th grade English, communication skills, and creative writing classes. While in Decorah she returned to UNI summers and obtained her Masters Degree in English.
     Taking early retirement, Ruth started writing and researching ghost stories. In 1988 she and her husband Ken moved to Worthington, MN to be close to one of their daughters. She continued to research, gather, and have published more ghost story books. In all, she had eight ghost books, one book of poems, and a book on the history of the Graham Lakes area published.
     For fourteen years she also researched and wrote the Reminiscing Column for the Daily Globe here in Worthington. For the past six weeks, Ruth was a resident of the Crossroads Care Center in Worthington, with Compassionate Care Hospice assisting. Ruth died on Friday May 13, 2011 at the Crossroads Care Center.
     Ruth is survived by her husband of 65 years, Ken, and their four children: Pat (Rolf) of Rochester, MN, Mike (Gabi) of Gainesville, FL, Ted (Brigitte) of Minneapolis, MN, and Dea (Wayne) of Worthington, 13 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Adella Mathers, of Hereford, TX and a brother, Waldo (Margie) Ullerich, of Kahului, HI. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. William and Emma Ullerich, a brother, Victor Ullerich, and a sister, Lois Zeitz.
     Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at the American Lutheran Church with Rev. Bruce Carlson officiating. Burial will be at the Worthington Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6:30pm to 8:30pm on Monday, May 16, 2011 at Benson Funeral Home, in Worthington.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to the Nobles County Library or the Nobles County Museum.
