Obituary for Rosemary Heideman

Gig Harbor, WA

Rosemary Abels (Hansen) Heideman, age 86, died Thursday, June 16, 2016 at her home in Gig Harbor, Washington. She was born in Rockford, IL to parents Fred Abels and Emma (Neuman) Abels. She graduated from West High School in Rockford, IL in 1949 (in September of 2014 she made it to her very first class reunion-the 65th). She met and married Richard W. Hansen in June of 1949. They relocated to Forrest City, IA where her first child, son, Peter Elwin Hansen was born in 1951. The family relocated for a brief time to Spirit Lake, IA where her daughter, Mildred Johanna “Josie” Hansen was born. Work brought the family to Worthington, MN area. She and Richard divorced in 1979.
Rosemary met and was united in marriage to the love of her life, Henry G. Heideman on April 10, 1982 at the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in rural Rushmore, MN. Together, they enjoyed snowmobile trips locally, to the Black Hills of South Dakota and to Colorado. In the summer months they were very active campers. They were active members of the Excel Camping group. They also regularly attended many bluegrass music shows. Rosemary maintained membership with the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in rural Rushmore, MN the Ellsworth, MN American Legion Auxiliary and Cutty’s Resort of Okoboji, IA.
An important part of Rosemary’s legacy is her prolific production of hundreds of different artistic articles over the course of her lifetime. She created dozens of quilts, crocheted afghans, knitted sweaters, caps and scarves, sewing projects, home and holiday decorations. She also enjoyed cooking and baking. When she relocated to the Pacific Northwest and purchased a home in Gig Harbor, Washington she became totally impassioned by gardening and the year-round lushness of the area
In addition, Rosemary loved to explore her new environment. Trips to Mount Rainier, St. Helens, Pt Defiance and boat trips on the bay were among a few of the many day trips she enjoyed. Activities she enjoyed included many local plays, The Grand Cinema Theater, Mariners games and the Washington State History Museum were a few of her other favorite outings.
Rosemary is survived by her children, Peter E. (Mary) Hansen, Minneapolis, MN and Mildred Johanna “Josie” Hansen, Gig Harbor, WA; Grandchildren Amber L. (Hansen) Orysyczyn, Golden Valley, MN; Peter A. (Heather) Hansen, Otsego, MN; Great grandchildren Ruby Rose, Violet Prairie and Abe Forrest; Brothers James “Jim” Abels, Rockford, IL; William “Bill” Abels, Roscoe, IL.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, first husband, Richard, second husband, Henry; brothers Edward (Barney) and Joseph and sister, Elma (Toots).
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2016, at 1:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home Chapel in Worthington, MN, with Rev. Dr. Daren Flinck officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery near Rushmore, MN.
