Obituary for Robert Lee Emary

Robert Lee Emary was born on June 21, 1935 at Havelock, Iowa to Lloyd and Florence Herscher Emary. Bob attended rural school in Palo Alto County, Iowa and Emmetsburg, Iowa, where he graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1953. He attended Emmetsburg Junior College in 1955, then on to Mankato State College, where he graduated with a BS degree in 1957 and an MS degree in 1963.
Bob married the love of his life, Judith Rolfson, on August 11, 1957 in Graettinger, Iowa. He served in the US Army Reserves for 12 years including a tour of duty in Vietnam during 1968-69. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in Vietnam. Bob was proud to be of service to his Country. He would also teach classes and give lectures on his experiences there.
For many years, Bob taught science and mathematics in Lake Crystal, Mapleton and Worthington, Minnesota. He retired in 1992 after 35 years of teaching He was elected as Worthington Teacher of the Year in 1990. After retiring from teaching, he worked for the District 518 Community Education Program and at the Holiday Inn, Ramada Inn, and Holiday Inn Express hotels.
He was an AARP Driver’s Safety instructor for many years and before his passing, working with many others across the United States updating the instruction/learning workbooks. He achieved many awards for his service with them.
His main hobby was doing genealogy research on the Emary family.
Bob was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church in Worthington where he served on several committees, was proficient with the kitchen dishwasher, enjoyed his Tuesday morning visits to sign checks and chat, and occasionally did children’s messages. He was also an active member and treasurer of the Nobles County DFL for many years.
Bob died on December 16, 2020 in Sanford Sioux Falls of complications due to COVID 19.
He is survived by his daughter, Becky, of Coon Rapids, MN. Also survived by his sister, Velma, Des Moines, Iowa, and many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy who passed on August 4, 2019; his parents, Lloyd and Florence; in-laws, Bert and Pearl; sisters, Opal, Martha and Fern, and brother, Elmer.
The Celebration of Life will be held on May 1, 2021 with a visitation at 9:30 am and service at 10:30 am at the First United Methodist Church in Worthington, MN, with Rev. Dr. Daren I. Flinck officiating. Burial will be held in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The Celebration of Life will also be live-streamed on First United Methodist Church webpage, Facebook page, YouTube channel and the church’s Boxcast channel (contact the church for link information at 507-372-2939).
Social distancing and masks are required. Dress comfortably.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to First United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
