Obituary for Robert Kenneth Roos

Robert Kenneth Roos passed away early in the morning of June 19, 2018, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Worthington.
Robert was born in Worthington, MN, on April 9, 1921, to John P. and Lilly M. Roos. He was baptized and confirmed at First Covenant Church. He was educated in Worthington public schools.
As a very young teenager, he was employed at Benjamin’s Bakery and the Seline Bakery. As an older teen, he was employed at Silverberg’s Department Store, working for Harry Sowles and Abe Silverberg. He worked first in the grocery and then in the men’s clothing and shoe departments.
Robert enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942. He was sent to the Great Lakes Training Center. While at Great Lakes, he joined the Blue Jacket Choir, singing at twice-weekly broadcasts and Sunday church services. He later graduated from Shipboard Radio School, Aviation Radio School, and Aerial Gunnery School. He also completed a class in ship-board firefighting. In his last assignment, Combat aircraft Services Unit 52, he participated in the sub-assault of Iwo Jima. He received his honorable discharge as Petty Officer First Class in November 1945.
After returning to Worthington, he was employed by the Worthington Daily Globe, where he advanced from pressman to advertising manager and served as a member of the board of directors before retiring in 1985. He was a life-time member of the First Covenant Church in Worthington, where he helped build the present building in 1960, and served at various times as a church officer, Sunday School teacher, and singer in the choir and male quartet. He was a board member of the Worthington Junior Chamber of Commerce and active in creating Worthington Chamber of Commerce promotional campaigns. He was a member of the Worthington Toastmasters, the American Legion, and the Golden K Kiwanis Club, and delivered Mobile Meals. He also led occasional worship services at area nursing and retirement homes, during which he usually played hymns on his harmonica.
In 1948, Robert married Marian L. “Lindy” Launder, daughter of Dr. Lloyd H. and Lorraine Launder of Marshalltown, IA. The couple moved from their private home to Ecumen Meadows in 2017, where they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in January 2018. The couple had six children: David Lloyd Roos; Margaret Ann “Peggy” (Gary) Lund; Daniel Robert (Laurita Carnahan) Roos; Timothy Lewis (Cheryl Sandberg) Roos; John Erick Roos; and Andrew Paul (Lori Vander Grift) Roos. They had 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, with one more great-grandchild on the way.
Robert was a devout and loving Christian servant, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He enjoyed time with family, especially when the family gathered for holidays, special occasions, and their annual summer week at East Battle Lake in central Minnesota. He loved telling jokes and reading funny stories, and he enjoyed many types of music, especially old hymns played and sung by family musicians. He taught his children to love one another as Jesus loved them.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Franklin, Alden, and John. He is survived by his wife and family.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2018, at 2:00 p.m., at the First Covenant Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor John Stewart officiating. Private family burial will be held in the Worthington Cemetery.
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
