Obituary for Robert John Demuth

Robert J Demuth was born June 3, 1927, in Pipestone, Minnesota, to Ceil (Giever) and Edward Demuth. A 1944 graduate of Edgerton High School, Robert then served in the United States Navy from May 1945 to July 1946. He worked for First National Bank of Minneapolis and the Frank Rogers Insurance Agency while living in St. Paul, MN. He and Betty Moriarty married September 9, 1949, in Woodstock, Minnesota. They owned Bob’s Bar in Woodstock. In 1957 they moved their family to Worthington, Minnesota, where Robert started as an independent insurance agent. This agency incorporated real estate in 1967. Robert retired in 1992.
Truly committed to his community, he served on the Worthington City Council 1965 – 1967, as Mayor from 1967-1971 and 1986 – 2003, and as Nobles County Commissioner from 1973-1977. He was president, secretary and vice president of the Minnesota Mayor’s Association and president of the Coalition of Minnesota Cities. He started the Turkey Day Mayor’s Luncheon as well as the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, Minority Awareness Committee and the Worthington Area Foundation. He was a member of Worthington Chamber of Commerce and Worthington Hospital Board, a ten-year member of the Worthington Public Utilities Board, and a 25-year member of the E.O. Olson Water Resource Board. He was a member of Toastmasters from 1957-1964 and held local offices as well as the position of Area Governor. For the League of Minnesota Cities he was a member of various committees, ambassador, President and on the Board of Directors. He and his wife Betty represented Worthington in its partnership city of Crailsheim, Germany, 9 times. A member of St. Mary’s Church in Worthington he served as lector, Eucharistic minister, choir member, and Seeds of Faith chairman.
These actions garnered Bob many accolades: Community Service Award from Worthington Chamber 1999; first Citizen Award from Blandin Foundation 1998; Outstanding Citizen of Nobles County 2004; Leadership Award from Missouri River Energy in 2014; and Honorary Citizen of Crailsheim, Germany 2002. In 2004 Bob had a street named after him in Crailsheim, Germany, called Burgermeister-Demuth-Alle. Robert passed away on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at his residence in Worthington, MN.
Left to cherish his memory are five children - Jeanne (Richard) Green of New Richmond, WI; Robert Jr. (Sandy) Demuth of Worthington, MN; Jill (Barry) Hinsperger of Rushmore, MN; Mary (Brett) Roetman of Lusk, WY and Michele (Tom) Salzwedel of Lakefield, MN; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren and sister-in-law Pat Demuth of Luverne, MN.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Worthington, MN. Burial, with military rites, will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Worthington.
In lieu of flowers, donations preferred to Worthington Area Foundation, Worthington-Crailsheim International and St. Mary’s School.
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
