Obituary for Robert Henry Paulsen

Robert “Bob” Henry Paulsen died April 17, 2021 at the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington at the age of 97 ½. He was officially born on October 21, 1923 (Mom claimed it was the 20th) to William and Martha (Finnern) Paulsen in Sioux Valley Township near Skunk Lake. They lived on various farms in Sioux Valley and Ewington Townships. In early 1937 the Paulsen family moved to Round Lake where his father died in February of 1938.
While Bob attended RLHS he was an avid athlete playing football, basketball and baseball/softball. He was well known for his doorless milk delivery truck and he helped his older brothers with farming. He graduated in 1942 and went to Spokane WA where he and his friend, Bob Beal, worked. In 1943 he returned to Round Lake and married Norma Ling on November 14. They lived in Minneapolis, where he worked at Butler Steel Manufacturing. They moved back to Round Lake in 1948, where he had a corn sheller and corn picker for custom work. In March of 1953 they moved to a farm north of Round Lake where he began farming and they raised four daughters. In 1970 they bought a farm in Section 29 of Indian Lake Township. Bob and Norma traveled throughout the US and spent time in Arizona before she died in 1979. He retired from farming soon after her death.
As a young adult, Bob’s hobbies were playing baseball and kittenball for various Round Lake teams and bowling in the winter. He could often be found in Eddie’s Pool Hall playing pool or card games. He began golfing in his 50s and continued into his 90s. He was active in his church, singing in the choir and serving as a Trustee and Elder and was on the building committee for the First Presbyterian Church in 1962-63. He also served on the School and Elevator Boards and was a member of the Round Lake Sr. Citizens group where he exercised and played pinochle.
In February of 1981 he married Shirley Johnson Thomsen. They spent many winters in Green Valley and Safford AZ golfing, bowling and socializing. He moved to Ecumen Meadows Worthington in 2015 where Shirley had moved earlier. She died in March of 2016. Bob enjoyed his time at the Meadows taking part in all their activities. In February of 2021 his health declined and he moved to the Sunset Hospice Cottage.
