Obituary for Robert Earl Shipley

Worthington, MN

     Robert Earl Shipley, 81, was born on January 18, 1928, in Worthington, MN, the son of Marshall and Marie (Meier) Shipley. He attended schools in Worthington. Robert worked for Capital Dairy, under John Fenstermacher, since the 5th grade delivering door to door. He served in the United States Navy from February 1946 to December 1947, aboard the USS Howard W. Gilmore submarine tender stationed in the Caribbean. After returning home from the Navy at 2:00 p.m., he returned to work with Capital Dairy at 5:00 a.m. the next morning. Robert married Margaret Johanson on October 13, 1951, in Worthington. He served in the United States Army National Guard during the Korean Conflict from January 1951 to September 1952. After his return, he worked for Oak Grove Dairy. He then owned and operated a grocery store in Rushmore, MN. Robert was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the VFW. He was active in the American Kennel Club and enjoyed hunting, dogs, and dog training. Robert collapsed unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, November 3, 2009. He was taken to Sanford Regional Hospital where he later died.
     Robert is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret of Worthington, MN; four children, Steve (Jill) of Chanhassen, MN, Dorene (Dr. Gerhard Cibis) of Kansas City, MO, Dan (Donna Hanten) of Rockford, MN, and Karen Halbakken (Curt) of Sartell, MN; eight grandchildren, Anne, Laurie, Carly, Ashley, Kelsey, Melanie, Laura, and Jeff; one sister, Iris Kluever of Bigelow, MN, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Thomas, his parents, two brothers, Douglas and Jack, and two infant sisters.
     Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2009, at 11:00 a.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Rev. Richard Ricker officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be held prior to the service at 9:30 a.m. at the Worthington Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Doug Anton, Neil Malmquist, Shane Kluever, Larry Ailts, Fred Anderson, Rex Shipley, and Jeff Halbakken.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 6, 2009, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church in Worthington or donor’s choice.
