Obituary for Richard Robert Mork

Worthington, MN

Richard Robert Mork, 70, of Worthington, Minnesota, passed away on February 20, 2017 at the Worthington Sunset Hospice Cottage, with his family at his side. Rich, a lifelong resident, was born in Worthington on June 23, 1946, the son of Raymond E. and Thelma Norman Mork. He graduated from Worthington High School in 1964, where he participated in three sports and played the baritone in the WHS Band; he then attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Rich’s career was celebrated in the Worthington Daily Globe on three occasions: he was well known to many in Worthington and surrounding communities as The Bookmobile Driver. He loved to match readers along his route with new books based on their past reading preferences. Reading was also his own favorite pastime; he even shared his love of reading by maintaining a bookshelf at the Long Branch Saloon! He was an enthusiastic fan of most Minnesota sports teams, and enjoyed coaching and keeping score for the Long Branch Women’s Softball Team. In the winter he enjoyed feeding both birds and squirrels. He is remembered by many local families as a kind hearted, supportive friend, fishing enthusiast, and world traveler. In his later years, Rich became a popular Santa Claus in the area; he volunteered his Christmas visits to the Nobles County Library, West Elementary School, and various pre-schools.
Rich is survived by his brother, John Mork, of St. Cloud, MN and Phoenix, AZ; his sister, Carolyn Bellanti, (John) of State College, PA, cousins, Lynne O’Neill (Tim) of Georgetown, TX, and Christine Hoover (Bob) of San Luis Obispo, CA. He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews, nineteen great nieces and nephews, and even six great great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister-in-law, Joan Ehlers Mork, niece, Susan Mork, and great great nephew, Afton Ostrom.
A private burial service was held for the family on February 22, 2017. A Memorial Service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Worthington on Saturday, February 25, 2017, at 11:00 am, with Rev. Dr. Daren Flinck officiating. Visitation will be held one hour before the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Worthington Sunset Hospice Cottage or to the Nobles County Library, Worthington.
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
