Obituary for Richard Monroe Hartzler

Richard Hartzler of Worthington, Minnesota died on Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at Sanford Worthington Medical Center in Worthington, Minnesota. He died from complications due to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) after a long battle, having been diagnosed in February of 2015.
Richard Monroe Hartzler, son of Archie and Bertha (Bute) Hartzler was born in Windom, Minnesota on April 7, 1940. He grew up and attended primary and secondary school in Lakefield, Minnesota, graduating in 1958. He went on to attend Mankato State College in Mankato, Minnesota and Dunwoody Industrial Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota between 1958 and 1962. He married Charlotte Ann Renken in Reading, Minnesota on July 14, 1962.
Richard joined the Air Force in January 1962 and served in Texas and North Dakota until January 1966 when he was honorably discharged. He worked as a draftsman and standards engineer in Rochester, Minnesota; Luverne, Minnesota; and El Segundo, California where he retired from Raytheon Corporation in April of 1999. After retirement, Richard and Charlotte moved to Worthington, Minnesota to be closer to family.
Richard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Charlotte; two sons, David (Marilyn) Hartzler of Brewster, Minnesota, and Darrin (Olia) Hartzler of Bethesda, Maryland; five grandchildren, Chris (Liz) Hartzler of Brookings, South Dakota, Megan Hartzler of Mankato, Minnesota, Anya Hartzler of Brewster, Minnesota, Katerina Hartzler and Danylo Hartzler of Bethesda, Maryland. Richard is also survived by sister, Katherine Hartzler of Lakefield, Minnesota, sister-in-law, Elaine Larson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, sister and brother-in-law, Bert (Kerm) Klitzke of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, sister-in-law, Wanda Renken of Worthington, Minnesota, brother and sister-in-law, Richard (Linda) Renken of Worthington, Minnesota, brother-in-law, Dale Reedstrom of Evans, Georgia, and many nieces and nephews.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his father and mother-in-law, Raymond and Viola Renken of Worthington, Minnesota; sisters, Janice Reedstrom of Evans, Georgia, and Shirley Browning of Harmony, Minnesota; brothers-in-law, Roger Renken of Rushmore, Minnesota, Garry Larson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Frank Browning of Harmony, Minnesota; and nephew, Greg Browning of Rochester, Minnesota.
Visitation will be at 12:00 pm on Sunday, November 19, 2017, followed by a short service at 12:30 pm, and lunch at 1:00 pm at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, Minnesota. Burial will be 2:30 pm at Worthington Memorial Gardens, two miles west of Worthington, Minnesota.
