Obituary for Richard Hartog

Worthington, MN

Richard Hartog was born April 29, 1932 in Adrian, MN to Klaus and Sena (Hector) Hartog. He passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at the age of 82, at the Sanford Worthington Medical Center.

Richard served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Luverne, MN and there he met and married Margaret Sodemann on November 16, 1958. They lived in Luverne for 10 years where Richard worked for Botsford Lumber Yard during those years. In 1968 they moved to Worthington where Richard worked for Wells Blue Bunny as a milkman, delivering milk and ice cream to homes and businesses for 22 years. Following the closure of Wells Blue Bunny, Richard worked for Terrace Park Dairy as a milkman for a number of years, then went to work at Sather’s Cookie Company until he retired in 1997.

Richard, also known as “Red” to many because of his thick red hair, had a kind heart and a warm smile with blue eyes that sparkled with pride and joy when he was with or spoke of his children, who he always considered his greatest achievement in life. He loved listening to polka music; watching old western movies; strawberry shakes; cheering for the Minnesota Vikings during those frustrating Sunday football games; and was an avid fan of Fox News. His favorite pastime, however, were his six grandchildren and keeping up with all of the many happenings in their lives. His first great-grandchild will be born this October.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Margaret, two sons, Daniel (Shelly) Hartog, Atwater, MN and Charles (Cheryl) Hartog, Brandon, SD; two daughters, Julie (Scott) Hoffman, Worthington, MN and Amy (Kevin) Mick, Worthington MN; Grandchildren: Luke (Laura) Hartog, Cold Spring, MN, Addie Hartog (fiancé Erik Geske) Clearwater, MN, Danielle Hartog, Brandon, SD, Michael Hartog, Brandon, SD, Cassie Mick, Elizabethtown, IL, and Mitchell Mick, Worthington, MN; foster grandchild, Daniel Dietz, Worthington, MN; four brothers, Rodney, Donald, John and Robert Hartog; and, foster sister, Gladys Siefkes.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; infant twin sons, Jim and Tim; and infant granddaughter, Annie.

Following a private family service, burial with military honors will be in the Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne, MN.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to PO Box 848, Worthington, MN 56187.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
