Obituary for Rev. Marvin Lee Soulek

Rev. Marvin Lee Soulek, age 71, of Round Lake, Minnesota died Thursday, February 6 at his home in Round Lake, surrounded by family and friends.
Marvin was born July 9, 1948 to George H. and Ludmilla A. (Kukacka) Soulek and lived in Montgomery, MN. At age six he moved with his family to Hopkins, MN, where he graduated from Hopkins High School in 1966. Following a year of electronics school, Marvin changed vocational course, attending Concordia College in St. Paul, MN. He continued on to Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, Illinois. After graduation, a call to Bethel Lutheran Church brought him to Round Lake in 1975, which became home for the rest of his life. On May 14, 1977 he married Lynn Thomsen at Bethel, and their son Paul was born in 1985. In addition to Bethel, Marvin served many other area congregations in vacancy or pulpit supply capacities during his many years of ministry.
Marv will be remembered for many things, but particularly for how he enjoyed visiting with people—like when they were working in their garages or shops and left the door unlocked. He could often be found touring Round Lake with Lynn, whether by foot, pedal, or automobile, and eagerly stopping for conversations with anyone who crossed their path. His attention to yardwork and vehicle care could be classified as obsessive, but the grass was always green and the vehicle was always clean! In his pre-seminary days, he played the drums in a 60’s rock-and-roll band. (He gave this up before becoming a pastor – maybe a little too much fun?) He took up studying the Czech language, which he looked forward to using at any opportunity. Czech foods like jaternice sausage, pork and dumplings, and kolaches were also favorites, but Lynn’s cooking always topped anything else in his book. He enjoyed old timey polka music, and diligently wrote daily “poetry” for the senior center’s morning coffee time. He loved listening to Paul’s musical endeavors and helping with his many (and sometimes misguided) house projects. Although skeptical at first, Marv came to find great enjoyment in Paul’s dog, Silas, and was also surprised by the joy of traveling with his family beyond Minnesota, especially to places with green grass in the winter!
Spending time with Lynn and Paul was his greatest joy, and in the past seven months they spent an extra measure of time talking, laughing, crying and singing hymns together. His family is grateful for that time together and for the excellent care provided by the many hospital, home health, and hospice workers. Marvin’s greatest gift to us was his own need for the Gospel message, and we rejoice that God in His grace has filled that need, redeeming Marvin from this veil of tears into a secure, unending joy filled with love that never fades, deteriorates, or has to say goodbye.
Marv is survived by his wife Lynn of Round Lake and son Paul of Seward, Nebraska; sister-in-law Amy (Larry) Yeske; brothers-in-law Dick Thomsen, Jeff Thomsen and Loren Pfeffer; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Arlene Pfeffer of Pine City, MN.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2020, at 1:00 p.m., at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Paul Sajban officiating. Burial will be held in the Round Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 10, 2020, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN and also one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the family for future designation.
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
