Obituary for Raymond Joseph Berreau

Raymond Joseph Berreau was born on July 17, 1928 to Rudolph V. and Margaret (Schreiber) Berreau at their farm in Graham Lakes Township in Nobles County. Ray was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brewster.
Ray attended Brewster Public School and graduated in 1946 as a top student. As a junior in high school Ray started working at the service station owned by Riley Oil Company. After graduation he worked at the station full time. In 1955, Ray bought half interest in the Riley Oil Company, and later in 1960 bought the remaining portion of the business, renaming it Ray’s Auto Service. He operated the service station until 1998.
In 1951, Ray was drafted into the US Army and served on the Korean Peninsula during the Korean War. He attained the rank of sergeant in the 725th Army Ordnance Battalion of the 25th Infantry Division. Ray graduated from the Army Military Instructors School and taught many large courses during his time in the service. He was a VFW and American Legion member. In 1950, Ray joined the Brewster Fire Department. He spent 32 years on the department, serving as Fire Chief for the last 22 years. During this time he served a three-year term on the Minnesota State Board on Fire Education. Ray was a leader in bringing rescue squads and training to Southwest Minnesota.
Ray had a true passion for understanding and teaching others about fuel, fire, water and gases.In his spare time, Ray enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and writing family history. He served on the Nobles County Historical Society board. He was also an active member in the Sacred Heart Parish for many years and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Ray moved into Lakeview Assisted Living in Heron Lake, MN in 2010. In Fall 2013 he moved to Ecumen Meadows in Worthington, MN where he resided until Nov. 2017. Ray passed away at the Sunset Hospice Cottage on Nov. 27, 2017 at the age of 89 years, four months, and ten days.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Donald, Alfred, and Francis Berreau, sister-in-law Rosemary (Forrette) Berreau, and nephew Alfred Justin (Jay) Berreau. He is survived by two sister-in-laws, Betty Berreau and Edith Berreau of Brewster, MN, nine nieces and nephews (Michael Berreau, Jane Collin, Linda Berreau, Nick Berreau, Shaun Berreau, Misha Berreau, Lori Linssen, Lisa Berreau, and Holly Umhoefer), and trusted friends Jim and Derrick Johnson.
Pallbearers will be Derrick Johnson, Jim Johnson, Nick Berreau, Rhett Linssen, Michael Berreau and Bill Collin. 
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 1, 2017, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brewster with Father Patrick Arens officiating. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery with the Brewster American Legion providing Military Rites.
