Obituary for Ralph Arthur McNab

Worthington, MN

Ralph Arthur McNab, 84, was born on December 24, 1927, in Worthington, MN, the youngest son of Dan and Madie (Dierks) McNab. He was baptized and confirmed in the First Presbyterian Church of Brewster, where he was a lifelong member. He attended and graduated in 1945 from Brewster High School, where he was a member of the Brewster boxing team. Ralph enlisted in the US Air Force on February 16, 1946, and was honorably discharged on August 31, 1947, to help on the family farm. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and received the World War II Victory Medal for his service.
Ralph was united in marriage to Alice Mae Terry on September 17, 1950, in Adrian, MN. They began their life together on a farm south of Brewster, where they milked dairy cows and raised crops. Ultimately they moved to Ralph’s parents’ home farm where they continued to live until his admission to Colonial Manor.
He drove bus for the Brewster schools for 15 years. He worked for Jackson County Soil and Water Conservation office in Lakefield, MN, for 28 years, where he was known as “the tree man”. During his many years with the Conservation office, Ralph was responsible for planting literally tens of thousands of trees in field wind breaks and farm sites throughout Jackson County. His knowledge of planting trees lived on at his home farm where he planted a variety of trees to create a safe haven for many varieties of wildlife. He also became a local icon as he enjoyed spending many hours on his Snapper lawnmower grooming the ditches that surrounded the home farm. Ralph was a dealer for Standard Oil for a time. Ralph was a lifelong farmer who enjoyed doing chores and working the land. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, which he was very proud of each of them. Ralph died on Friday, December 30, 2011, at the Colonial Manor.
Ralph is survived by his children, Terry (Lynda) McNab of Brewster, Brett (Ginger) McNab of Brewster, Cathy (Carl) Hennager of Fulda, and David (Kaley) McNab of Brewster; six grandchildren, Kelsey (Paulette) McNab of Fulda, Robert (Bobbi-Jo) McNab, Hope (Dakota Nitch), Larissa, Wyatt, and Kalen McNab of Brewster; eight great grandchildren, Micaela, Jordan, Shaylee, Justin, Camille, Hailey, Gunnar, and Hannah; one brother, Harold (Dolly) McNab of Worthington; one sister, Jessie Rossow of Worthington, and one brother-in-law, Albert Ruckelshausen of Worthington. Ralph was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, parents, Dan and Madie, brother, Roland McNab, and sister, Marguerite Ruckelshausen.
