Worthington, MN

Peter Van Duinkerken, age 93, passed away on Monday, December 19, 2016, peacefully at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, MN.
Peter was born on April 22, 1923, in Iona, MN, the son of Evert and Gertrude (Sikking) Van Duinkerken. Peter married Delores (Hutt) Duinkerken on April 22, 1946, in Worthington, MN. She passed away in 2000. Peter then married Mary (Allen) Duinkerken on September 29, 2001, in Estherville, IA. She passed away in 2015. Our father said he was the luckiest man to have two wonderful women in his life to love!
He graduated from Slayton High School under a veterans program. He was so proud when he received that diploma; he smiled from ear to ear.
Peter worked as a police officer for Worthington for 18 years. After that he worked for Armour and Co. for 17 years. Peter also drove school bus for the city of Worthington and was a valet for the Worthington Clinic until he lost his eye sight. Peter was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946.
Grateful for sharing his life are his 9 children, Lynn (Mark) Oberg of Sioux Falls, SD, Steve (Beverly) Duinkerken of Monticello, FL, Rebecca (Greg) Joldersma of Fort Meyers, FL, Mark (Sheila) Duinkerken of Ankeny, IA, Carla Lang of Dell Rapids, SD, Bart (Michelle) Duinkerken of Sioux Falls, SD, Paul Duinkerken of Sioux Falls, SD, Lisa (Edward) Laughter of Mankato, MN, and Carrie Tow of Cape Coral, FL. Peter had 26 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; stepchildren, Laurie Allen (Bob) of Boston, MA, Kathy Fjeld (Rick) of Granville, IA, Joan Moyer of Spirit Lake, IA, and Rochelle (Chris) Reinesch of Gold Canyon, AZ; sisters-in-law, Carlene Cypert of West Covina, CA and Theresa Allen of Estherville, IA, and brother-in-law, Jim (Beverly) Hutt of Sioux Falls, SD.
He is also survived by three sisters, Katie Vosberg of Worthington, MN, Irene Jasperson of Madison Lake, MN, and Evie Jordt of Sibley, IA, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, nine sisters, and his beloved wives, Delores and Mary.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2017, at 10:00 a.m., at the American Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Bailey Fossum officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Worthington Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to the VA Home in Luverne, MN or the American Lutheran Church in Worthington, where he was a lifelong member.
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
