Worthington, MN

Paul L. Hagen was born in Minneapolis, MN on September 14, 1932 and on Valentine’s Day in 1933 he was adopted by Fred and Rose Hagen of Dunnell, MN. He grew up on the family farm and went to country school District 65. He attended Sherburn High School and graduated in 1949. Paul joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1951. He attended boot camp in San Diego, CA and then transferred to infantry training and helped start a new third Marine brigade unit. He was sent on an emergency draft to Korea in 1952 and joined Fox Co., 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines. At first he was a sniper and eventually became a platoon sergeant. He was discharged in February 1954. Paul owned and operated a truck line out of Jackson, MN from 1955-1961. He then began a hog buying business in Montevideo, MN until 1964 when he moved to Worthington and began buying cattle for Sioux City Dressed Beef.
Paul met Barbara (Tripp) Tow and her three children; Robin, Daniel and Leesa Tow. They were married on November 6, 1964. They had a son, Bryan, in 1966. The family showed quarter horses for many years and tried their hand at farming for four years. During this time Paul worked for Spencer Foods of Spencer, IA for three years and Iowa Beef Processors for 29 years. He retired in 2001. During his retirement he drove cars for local dealerships and cared for his wife Barbara who suffers from Alzheimer’s.
Paul was a member of the Marine Corps League and the American Legion. He belonged to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Worthington for 52 years. Paul died on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington, MN.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 51 years, Barbara and children: Robin Tow of Andover, MN; Daniel Tow (Paula) of Independence, KS; and Bryan Hagen (Susan) of Worthington, MN. Along with his five grandchildren: Travis Tow (Brandy); Trevor Tow (Elizabeth); Lauren Kelley (Brandon); Turner Hagen; Carson Hagen and five great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Leesa Riordan, both of his parents, his brother Richard Hagen, and sister Luella Luers (Leo).
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Dennis Brech officiating. Casket bearers will be Travis Tow, Trevor Tow, Turner Hagen, Carson Hagen, David Noll and Mark Knips. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Worthington Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington and also from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the church.
