Obituary for Patricia Lea Berger

Patricia Lea Berger, age 80, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, May 31, 2020, in Sioux Falls, SD.
Patricia was born on December 13, 1939, in Iola, KS, the daughter of Kenneth and Catherine (Fife) Smail. At the age of 2, she moved with her parents to Lakefield, MN. The family then moved to Worthington, MN when she was 7. Patricia graduated from Worthington Senior High School in 1957. On July 17, 1957, she married Edward J. Berger Jr. She spent many years working at Alf Drug. She later worked for Carlson and Hoevet Ophthalmologists where she worked until her retirement. After retirement, she worked part time at Curves for Women, where she became friends with many of the clients ~ friendships which lasted the rest of her life.
Throughout her life, Pat attended hundreds of sporting events, supporting her children. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed doing needlepoint and crocheting. Pat was a wonderful cook and baker.
Pat’s greatest pleasure was spending time with her family. She loved family holidays and adored spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. One of Pat’s favorite past times was to have lunches and coffee with her many many friends.
Pat and Ed spent much of their retirement together traveling the region, collecting many many many antiques and collectibles, often times with her older sister, Bev and husband Paul.
She was a member of Grace Community Church and the Eastern Star.
Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Barry (Linda Griffith) of Worthington, MN and Michael of New Brighton, MN; daughter, Laurie (Terry) DeNeui of Rushmore, MN; grandchildren, Alex (Sara) Solem of Huron, SD, Katherine (Adam) Johnson of Kempner, TX, Hannah (Nate) Engelkes of Little Rock, IA, Brent Berger of Worthington, Brady Berger of Worthington, and Hope DeNeui of Marshall, MN; great grandchildren, Kellen and Kamryn Solem; Madison and Cassidy Johnson, and Gibson and Gustin Engelkes; sisters, Beverly (Paul) Allen of Rochester, MN and Marsha (Robert) Tofte of Shoreview, MN; brother, Tomm (Joyce) Smail of Oakland, CA; sisters-in-law, Gladys Berger of Worthington, Nora (Dale) Everding of Worthington, Karmel Berger of Sioux Falls, SD, and Donna Berger of Worthington, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed in 2012; her parents, and great grandson, Griffin Douglas Engelkes in 2019.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 26, 2020, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at Grace Community Church in Worthington, MN. The service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Scott Barber officiating. Private family interment will be in the Worthington Cemetery.
In lieu of memorials or flowers, the family requests donations be given to Alzheimer’s Research.
Social distancing and masks are recommended.
Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
