Obituary for Norma Maryanne Rienstra

Norma Maryanne Kuhl Rienstra passed away peacefully in Worthington on Saturday, July 1, 2017. She was under hospice care at Crossroads Care Center. She was born to Katie Brinkhaus Kuhl and Charles Kuhl on September 29, 1918, and was the oldest of their eight children. She attended Reading and Worthington schools and graduated in 1936. In 1942, she married her longtime sweetheart Ralph Rienstra. After his service in World War II they farmed outside of Reading for a number of years raising turkeys and sharing a love of camping, hunting, fishing, bowling and hard work. In 1959, they moved to Worthington to buy a business and raise their family. Norma worked side by side with Ralph as owners of Ralph’s Shoe Service for many years. In 1967, she started working as a Shaklee Representative and continued this into her mid 80’s. In her younger years she worked at the Farmer’s Co-op as a bookkeeper and during the war she worked at the army base post office in Sioux Falls. Norma loved playing the piano and was the pianist for many years at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, where she was a member from its beginning. She sang in the Choir, was a Sunday School Teacher, took Bethel Bible courses, and was a student of Steven Ministries. She was a member of the Christian Women’s Club and Ladies Circle, and she loved being a member of their prayer chain, even in to her early 90’s. She loved living on the lake in Worthington, where she tended her beautiful flower gardens and enjoyed boating, waterskiing, and swimming. Many Sundays were spent picnicking on the patio and sharing family life with her siblings and relatives. She was a wonderful cook and baker, enjoyed keeping house and truly loved being a wife and mother. She was a member of the Lioness Club, Worthington Country Club, an active participate in NAMI, and a volunteer for the Crippled Children School church program.
She is preceded in death by her parents Katie and Charles Kuhl, step-father Roland Knips, four sisters, Helen, Marlys, Lavonne, and Wanda and step-sister Beverly Kruse, three brothers, Don, Ray and Dale, and her beloved husband Ralph. She is survived by her son David, Worthington, daughter Julie (Chuck) Greybar, Oregon, granddaughter Tina (Paul) Darrah, Colorado, and great-grandsons Zach Black, Arkansas, and Conrad Darrah, Colorado.
