Obituary for Nicholas Joseph Henkels

Lake Lillian, MN

      Nicholas “Nick” Joseph Henkels, age 70, was born on November 10, 1943, the oldest child of Roderick A. and Margaret L. (Freking) Henkels. He was united in marriage to Patricia A. Starner on November 14, 1964, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brewster. They lived in Heron Lake until 2004 when they moved to their lake home on Big Kandiyohi near Willmar, MN.

      Nick worked for Carlson Implement, Home Oil Company and Schaffer Oil Company. He was a volunteer fireman for 29 years. Before his health began to fail he enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling, woodworking and camping. After they retired, he and Pat spent their winters in Arizona. Nick was a loving husband and father and exceptionally proud of his “brown eyed girls”. Nick died on Friday, October 17, 2014 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

      Nick is survived by his wife, Pat of Lake Lillian, MN; daughter, Brenda (Lonnie) Little of Okabena, MN; two grandsons, Jordan Bloom of Moorhead, MN and Dustin Bloom of Miltona, MN; his mother, Margaret Henkels of Heron Lake, MN; his siblings, Ed (Denise) Henkels of Heron Lake, MN, Mary (Tom) Follen of Brewster, MN, Mitz (Larry) Diemer of Heron Lake, MN, Dan Henkels of Anchorage, AK, and Chris Henkels of Hopkins, MN. He was preceded in death by his father, Roderick; daughter, Paula; sisters, Elaine and Cathie and his father-in-law and mother-in-law.

      Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at 10:30 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake, MN, with Father Russell Scepaniak officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Heron Lake, MN.

      May Nick rest in peace.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 20, 2014, from 6:00 9:00 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake, MN.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
