Obituary for Nancy Lou Zuehlke

Nancy Kaercher Zuehlke, age 90, was born on July 27, 1929, daughter of Cecil and Mabelle (Mountford) Kaercher. She graduated from Ortonville High School in 1947, loving Latin and fun times with friends dancing to big bands.
Nancy Lou received a teaching diploma in 1949 from St. Cloud Teachers College. She was frustrated not to be allowed to train as an artist; however, she did meet and fall in love with Cal Zuehlke. She thought, “He will make a great father!” They married August 1st, 1949.
Nancy and Cal lived in Warren, New London, and St. Peter where Cal taught and Nancy was mother of two girls. In 1959 they moved to Worthington for Cal to teach and Nancy became housewife extraordinaire, mother two more times, artist of intricate corn husk dolls, and contributing writer for The Globe from 1986 to her last printed story, “Cinematic Staircase” (May 29th,2019.)
Active in many women’s clubs, Crailsheim Board, and First Lutheran Church Board and Women’s Circle, she was always happy to serve. Nancy relied on her faith to anchor her through life.
She loved her children, her family, Cal and all his jokes, and her decades of women friends. Nancy loved to swim, ride bike around the lake, and craft fairs. Nancy loved MN history, Native American culture, art, and the prairie. She designed unique arrangements from local flora and fauna which she gathered, flourishing a business for twenty years from her “egg money.”
Studying tap dance as a child (which she would show her kids) her love of music continued by watching WHS marching band practice in front of their home, and band concerts at Chautauqua Park, where she enjoyed being the emcee. She loved events and making things happen. “Lets’ get this show on the road,” was often heard at the Zuehlke home.
Nancy passed away on Monday, July 20, 2020, at the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington, MN.
Nancy is survived by three daughters, Jessica Zuehlke (Jim Stowell) [Red Wing]; Sally Zuehlke [Worthington]; and Jill Zuehlke (Sam DeHoyos) [San Angelo, TX]; one son, John Zuehlke (Erin Earl) [Maple Grove]; nieces and nephews and their children. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Kay and Virginia.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2020, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN.
