Obituary for Mildred "Midge" Elaine Hokeness

Mildred Elaine (Smith) Hokeness, age 89, of Worthington died Tuesday, August 11, 2020 at Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington, MN. She was born on January 17, 1931 in Sioux City, IA to William and Elsa (Tveitnes) Smith. She attended school in Westbrook, MN and graduated in 1949 from Worthington High School. Shortly after high school, at the age of 19, Midge met and married the love of her life, Orville Hokeness, on November 12, 1950. The couple began their life together living on the Hokeness Farm in Rushmore, MN. They welcomed their first child, a son, William Michael (Mike), in September 1951, and their second child, a daughter, Pamala Kay, in August 1954 before moving to town (Worthington), in 1958.
Midge, along with her husband, were entrepreneurs and business partners with Barney Bishop for 15 years before purchasing Bishop’s Clothing Store and renaming it The Stag Clothiers. Together they owned and operated the men’s clothing store, as well as three other clothing stores, for an additional 20 years. Orville handled the business end, while Midge made herself at home in the tailor shop.
Midge enjoyed sewing, painting, creating, reading, golfing, walking, biking and traveling with Orville to places near and far, including China, Australia and Norway, but, what Midge enjoyed most of all was spending time with her family. She always made her family a top priority and would be at as many activities and events for her grandchildren and great grandchildren as possible. Throughout her life, Midge was involved with activities and small groups at American Lutheran Church and then at St. Matthew Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday School, participated in the church quilting club and volunteered whenever and wherever she was needed. She was also an active member of the Red Hat Society and looked forward to dressing up and socializing with the other members each month. Midge was a true gift to those that knew her.
Grateful for having shared her life are Midge’s husband of 69 years, Orville, Worthington; son, Mike (Sheryl) Hokeness, Worthington; daughter, Pam (Marty) Rickers, Worthington; four grandchildren, Jesse (Tiffany) Hokeness, Washington, D.C.; Nate Hokeness, Worthington; Gretchen (Chris) Scheidt, Sioux Falls, SD; Ingrid (Melissa) Rickers, Calabasas, CA; two great-grandchildren, Millie and Mason Ennis, Sioux Falls, SD; two step great-grandchildren, Kody and Tyler Scheidt, Burnsville, MN; sister, Penelope (Gary) Smith, El Dorado Springs, MO.
Midge was proceeded in death by her parents, William and Elsa; sister, Geraldine Smith; and brother, Russell James Sorenson.
Please join us in celebrating Midge’s life on Tuesday, August 18, 2020. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Worthington. A private burial at the Adrian Cemetery will immediately follow the service.
