Obituary for Mildred Lidia Matheis

Worthington, Minnesota          Mildred “Millie” Lidia Matheis, 93, was born on November 3, 1912, in Arlington, South Dakota, the daughter of August and Mary Swanson Doescher.  She was baptized on November 4, 1912, and grew up on a farm near Arlington.  After graduation, she attended General Beadle State College, now known as Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota.  She taught elementary school in Arlington.  Millie married Urban Matheis on June 30, 1934, in Arlington.  After their marriage, they lived in Brookings, Huron, and Yankton, South Dakota.  In December of 1956, they moved to California.  After Urb’s death, Millie returned to the Midwest in 1996, to be near her family and relatives.  Millie was active in her church and the Catholic Daughters.  She loved sewing, painting, crafts, playing piano and bridge.  Millie died on Tuesday, May 23, 2006, at the George Community Good Samaritan Center in George, Iowa.     Millie is survived by her son-in-law, Richard (Shirley) Adel, and their son, Ryan, of Worthington, MN; six grandchildren, Valerie (Jerome) Battis, of Monticello, MN, Cheryl (William) Morrissey, of Billerica, MA, Clifford (Karen) Adel, of Cannon Falls, MN, Conrad (Heather) Adel, of Chaska, MN, Victoria (Brian) Michaud, of St. Louis Park, MN, and Mary Ann (Todd) Noonan, of Davis, CA, and fifteen great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Urban, on May 17, 1994; two daughters, Marylyn Star Adel, on June 27, 1980, and Dianne M. Smyth, on October 25, 2002; her son-in-law, Bruce Smyth; her parents; two brothers; one sister, and one grandson.      Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2006, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Worthington, Minnesota, with Father Charles Quinn officiating.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Worthington.   Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2006, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Worthington, Minnesota.   Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
