Obituary for Mavis A. Appel

Worthington, MN

      Mavis A. Appel died on Thursday, July 4, 2013, at the Sibley Nursing & Rehab Center in Sibley, IA. She was born in Worthington, MN on March 8, 1929 to John and Doris (Kunze) Graff. She was the last born in a family that included 10 siblings and was raised on the family farm north of Worthington.
     Mavis was united in marriage to Orville Appel on February 18, 1947. They spent many years enjoying square dancing with the Turkey Trotters. Mavis and her family lived on the west shore of Lake Okabena since 1959. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s she participated in family-organized regional water-ski shows. Along with water skiing, she also enjoyed hunting and fishing. She loved her family and doted on her three grandchildren. In later years, she spent many hours in her backyard, watching lake activities with her cat Mitzi.
      Mavis is survived by two sons: Steve (Jan) Appel of Worthington and Scott Appel of Minneapolis; three grandchildren: Troy (Kristin) Appel, Kelly (Jason) Beckmann, Jeff (Amy) Appel; six great-grandchildren: Kalea, Kamryn, Kiara, Jackson, Hadlea, McKinlea; two sisters, Edna Braun and Agnes Krull of Rushmore.
Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five sisters and two brothers.
      A private family service is planned. Burial will be at a later date.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
