Obituary for Maurine Lucille Prouty

Worthington, Minnesota      Maurine Lucille Prouty, 98, was born on September 11, 1908, in Cushing, Iowa, the daughter of John and Hannah Olson Johnson.  She graduated from Cushing High School and then attended Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  After completion, she worked at Shrivers Department Store in Sioux Falls.  Maurine married Walter Prouty on August 3, 1928, in Sioux Falls.  They owned and operated Prouty Wholesale Grocery Company in Worthington for several years.  She continued to work at the store for one year after Walter’s death in 1961 and then sold the business.  Maurine then worked at Gordon’s Hallmark in Worthington for 16 years.  In 2003, she became a resident at the Meadows in Worthington and also considered them part of her family.  Maurine was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Worthington.  She was also a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, served on the Nursing Advisory Board, and was a 50 year member of the Eastern Star.  Maurine belonged to three bridge clubs, enjoyed dancing, traveling, eating out, and most of all her family.  Those who know her best say she was a very glamorous and dignified woman with a heart of gold and a great sense of humor.  Maurine died on Thursday, November 30, 2006, at the Worthington Regional Hospital.     Maurine is survived by two daughters, Yvette (Don) Nelson, of Goodyear, Arizona, and Tahma (Lyle) Knudson, of Omaha, Nebraska; one son-in-law, Gene Struck, of Mankato, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, Kraig Nelson, David Nelson, Scott (LeaAnn) Nelson, Kirk Nelson, Barrett (Christine) Knudson, Dacia (Patrick) Owens, Heather Knudson, and Jodi (Michael) Johnson; five great grandchildren, and one sister-in-law, Marie Johnson, of Spencer, Iowa.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; one son, Monte Rae Prouty; one daughter, Virgie Struck; her parents, John and Hannah Johnson; two sisters, Caryl Johnson and Wilma Robson, and one brother, Virgil Johnson.     Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 4, 2006, at 2:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Worthington, Minnesota, with the Rev. Gordon J. Orde officiating.  Maurine’s grandchildren will serve as bearers.  Burial will be in the Worthington Cemetery.Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 3, 2006, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington and on Monday, December 4, 2006, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Worthington.
