Obituary for Maureen Elizabeth Soules

Worthington, MN

Maureen Elizabeth Murphy Soules, a longtime resident of Worthington, MN, passed away on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at the Sunset Hospice Cottage, Worthington, MN, following a brief illness.

Maureen was born on September 16, 1932 on the family farm south of Le Mars, IA to John Sr. and Mary Cain Murphy. She grew up with a large family, 6 brothers and 5 sisters. She attended country school, catholic high school, and college all in Le Mars, IA. Maureen was a teacher, a bookkeeper, and a tutor all of her life.

On June 7, 1960 Maureen was united in marriage to Benny D. Soules at St. Joseph‘s Catholic Church in Le Mars, IA. They later moved to Worthington, MN where they raised 5 children, and together owned and operated the Gateway Standard Service Station until Benny’s death on January 31, 1980. After just 19 years of marriage, Maureen was left to raise their five children, all teenagers at the time of his death, by herself. She was a very courageous and independent woman, and was admired by many for her strength and perseverance especially through those tough early years, and the many years that followed.

Maureen was a devout Catholic and served her church in numerous ways, including attending mass faithfully every week, reading at mass, offering rides to friends who could no longer drive to mass, and took communion to the sick and homebound.

Maureen enjoyed playing bridge, sewing, baking, golfing, board games, coin collecting, math games, visiting friends, and spending time with her family.

All five of her children and their families went over and above to tend to her needs in her final months of life.

Maureen will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, sharp mind, kind heart, generous soul, wonderful sense of humor, never ending love for her children and grandchildren, and being a good friend to many. She was especially close to the ladies she played cards with.

Honored to have shared her life are her five children; a daughter Suzanne (Michael) Potter of Worthington, MN; four sons; Bernard (Karen) Soules, Parker, CO, Rick (Darci) Soules, Bigelow, MN, Brian Soules and Ron Soules, Worthington, MN; sixteen grandchildren; Ben, Kirsten, Jesse, Travis, Tosha, Alex, Cody, Gracyn, Helki, Miquel, Latwain, Philippe, Lakeyta, Sade, Marcus, Dasia; and ten great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are four sisters; Eileen Murphy, Cheryl (Jack) Bartz, Teresa Jeffrey, Mary Frances (Maurice) Redmond; one brother, Leo (Peggy) Murphy; sisters-in-law Mary Murphy and Caroline Jensen; brother-in-law Bob Van Wyhe; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Maureen was preceded in death by her husband Benny, her parents John Sr. and Mary Murphy, her sister Rose Mary Van Wyhe, and brothers; John Jr., Francis, Edward, Thomas, and Sylvester (Gus) Murphy.

Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2016, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Worthington, MN, with Father James Callahan officiating. Honorary casket bearers include her four sons; Bernard, Rick, Brian, Ron, and her son-in-law Michael Potter. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Worthington.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 5, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

      Blessed be her memory.
