Obituary for Matthew James Smith

Brewster, Minnesota      Matthew J.  Smith, age 46, of Brewster, MN died Thursday, January 31, 2008 at home. He was born in Dubuque, IA on October 9, 1961 to Marty Smith and Lynn Smith. Matt attended school in St. Cloud and Duluth, MN and graduated from high school in Aberdeen, SD.  He graduated from the Lake Area Vo-Tech Auto Mechanic program in 1983.     On June 4, 1983 he married Lona Pearson at Center Lutheran Church near Salem, SD.  Matt and Lona moved to Worthington, MN where they began their careers and started their family, having two sons – Jared and Jake.   Matt worked as a mechanic at S & L Garage, worked for First Auto Supply, started Smith Dental Lab with his wife, drove school bus, and was most recently a purchasing agent for the Veterinary Medical Center.  Matt and his family have lived in Brewster for the past 18 years.     Matt was passionate about community involvement.  He loved people and always had time for kids.  He was a volunteer hockey coach for the Worthington Hockey Association for 23 seasons and served on the Worthington Hockey Board of Directors.  He was the Worthington head varsity coach for the 2006-2007 season.    Matt has been a YMCA Big Brother and a member of American Lutheran Church in Worthington where he has served on Youth Council and as a confirmation mentor.   Matt was a volunteer fireman for 16 years for the Brewster Fire Department.     Matt had a great appreciation for nature.  He was an avid hunter and helped local youth with firearm safety classes. He enjoyed fishing, boating, time at the lake, and spending time with his family.     Matt is survived by his wife, Lona, and two sons, Jared and Jake, of Brewster;  parents Marty (Jan) Smith, Fredericksburg, TX and Lynn Smith, West Des Moines, IA;  one brother, Mark (Tootie) Smith, Eko, NV; two sisters Mindy (Mike) Sauer, Lubbock, TX and Shelli (Gregg) Lang, Las Vegas, NV; two step-sisters Sheilah (Mike) Gross and Shelly Allmendinger of Aberdeen, SD; and several nieces  and nephews.     Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 4, 2008, at 10:30 a.m., at the American Lutheran Church in Worthington, Minnesota, with the Rev. Mike Zaske officiating.  Casket bearers will be Lee Smith, Cody Sauer, Mike Pearson, Jesse Pearson, Mike Naumann, Brian Lingle, Scott Hain, and Joe Osowski.  Burial will be in the Hersey Cemetery in Brewster, Minnesota.  Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 3, 2008, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Worthington Hockey Association, Brewster Fire Department, or Worthington Home Hospice Care.
