Obituary for Matilda Cross

Brewster, Minnesota

Matilda (Siebring) Cross, 91, was born on October 27, 1919 in George, IA, to Katie (Snuttjer) and Richard Siebring. Her family moved to rural Brewster in the early 1920’s. After graduating from Brewster High School, Matilda attended junior college in Worthington and graduated from art school in St. Paul. She worked as a commercial artist in the Twin Cities for several years, where she also maintained a studio with a friend from school. Matilda moved back to Brewster to help out with the family but continued to create art in a studio on her parents’ farm. Some of her greeting cards and decorative items were sold at Dayton’s in the Twin Cities. Later, she worked at the bank in Brewster.
Matilda married George Cross on January 27, 1956 and moved on to the Cross farm where they raised three children, Charles (Patti) of Stoughton, WI, Michael, Daniel and Samuel; Richard (Laurie) of Brewster, MN, Gabrielle, Alexandra and Brennen; and Kathryn (Mark) Josephson of Welch, MN. Matilda and George enjoyed taking road trips with their children in the summers, making it to both coasts with their tent camper trailer. After retirement, the couple enjoyed staying active in the church, square dancing and spending time with family. After George’s death in 1997, Matilda continued to live at their home in Brewster until moving to the Meadows in Worthington in 2006. Matilda died on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at the Crossroads Care Center in Worthington, MN.
Matilda was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 6, 2011 at 10:30 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Brewster, MN, with Rev. Robert Bartlett officiating. Burial will be in the Hersey Cemetery near Brewster.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 6, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Brewster.
