Obituary for Mary Kathleen Regnier

Worthington, MN

Mary Kathleen Regnier, age 94, of Worthington, died on Friday, November 28, 2014, at the Crossroads Care Center. She was born August 17, 1920 in Beauford, MN to Mary and Charles Howley. She lived her entire childhood in Beauford attending elementary school there and high school in Mapleton, MN. She received her Associate of Arts Degree in Education from Mankato Teachers College.

Katsy (as she was known by her friends) taught in a country school near Beauford for two years. In 1943 she married Daniel Regnier in Mapleton, MN. They immediately moved to Storden, MN where Daniel was offered a teaching position in the local school system. After the end of the school year, Daniel took a position as social studies teacher at the Junior High in Worthington. They kept their permanent residence in Worthington for the rest of their lives.

Their first child was born in 1945 and Katsy stayed at home to take care of what turned out to be five children. In her early forties, she resumed her career in teaching at the elementary school in Bigelow, MN and went on to teach for years at West Elementary in Worthington.

She was always a very active lady playing golf, walking, jogging, working out at the gym while caring for a household. In her quiet time, she loved to read devouring such authors as Pearl S. Buck and James Michener. She was a devout Catholic and an active member of St. Mary’s Women’s Guild.

Following her and her husband’s retirement in 1983 they began a long retired life that included spending winters in Texas and summers in Minnesota. Golfing was an essential part of their activities in both places.

After Daniel’s death in 2007 and following a serious personal injury, Katsy moved to the Crossroads Care Center where she resided for her remaining years.

Kathleen was a patient, kind, energetic and loving mother and wife. She will be sorely missed by her family and all that knew her.

Kathleen is survived by her five children, Nadine (Thomas) Wittkopp, Greenback, TN, Steven (Barbara) Regnier, Worthington, MN, Douglas (Mary) Regnier, Albuquerque, NM, Annette (Patrick) Becker, Colorado Springs, CO, and Brian (Sharynn) Regnier, Austin, TX; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Daniel, sister Joyce Kruczewski, brothers James, Joseph and Eugene Howley and grandson Edward Wittkopp.

Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2014, at 1:00 p.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Worthington with Father James Callahan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Benson Funeral Home is coordinating the arrangements.
