Marvin “Mike” Wiertzema, age 85, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2021, at the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington, MN.
Mike was born on October 5, 1935 in Little Rock Township to George and Luella (Habbena) Wiertzema. He attended country school and Adrian High School. On June 2, 1957 he was united in marriage to Verna Lindemann. They were looking forward to celebrating their 64th wedding anniversary this year. Their union was blessed with three children, Deb, Beth and Tom.
Mike worked for the Nobles County Highway Department while living in Worthington. After that, they moved south of Rushmore to begin farming and continued to work the land for the next 50 years. In addition to farming, he found time to serve on the Little Rock Township Board and on the Sunset Rest Cemetery Board. Mike was a very active member at St. John’s Lutheran Church, serving on the church council in many capacities. He also served his country as a member of the National Guard of MN.
Mike was proud of his wife, children and grandchildren and enjoyed the times spent together. Having the grandchildren to the farm for cousin’s camp-outs, going on fishing trips, and playing cards were special times. He enjoyed caring for others and visiting with everyone while sharing a good joke.
Mike is survived by his wife, Verna; children, Deb (Jim) Chapa, Beth (Poncho) Wiertzema-White, and Tom (Sandra) Wiertzema; grandchildren, Matthew (Cassie) Chapa, Emily (Joel) Rachwitz, Jonathan (fiancée Stephanie Welch) Chapa, Kasen White, Brynne White, and Shelby Wiertzema; brother, Virgil (Anita) Wiertzema, and sister, Florence Winter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Luella (Habbena) Wiertzema, sisters, Verona Wiertzema, Rosella Dammer, and Delores “Lorie” (Ed) Weiss, and brothers, Herman (Lena) Wiertzema, Clarence (Alma) Wiertzema, and Orvin Wiertzema.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 16, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN and also one hour prior to the service. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2021, at 10:30 a.m., at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rushmore, MN. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery near Rushmore.
Blessed be his memory.
