Obituary for Martha Vela Cardenas

Martha Cardenas was born on May 18, 1936 in Chiuhua Mexico to parents Luis and Maria Vela. In 1970, Martha migrated from Mexico and moved to Worthington, MN.
Martha learned English by teaching herself and she was always working on improving her English. She worked at Campbell Soup Company and after working there for a few years she was able to move her children to Worthington with her. After retiring from Campbell Soup, Martha founded Home of Hope. Home of Hope was a house Martha bought for people who were new to the community and needed a place to stay temporarily while they transitioned. She had a passion for helping people and through Home of Hope she helped over 600 people.
Martha enjoyed hosting holidays for family and friends. She was well known for cooking as she was a very good cook and everyone enjoyed the food she made. Martha was an advocate for the community and was active in various groups.
Martha passed away on October 31, 2019 at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 83.
She will be greatly missed.
Martha is survived by her daughter, Juana; and son, Alex; and many other family members and friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 8, 2019, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Worthington, MN.
