Obituary for Marlys Mae Hromatko

Worthington, MN

      Marlys Mae Hromatko was born July 28, 1935 in Little Rock, IA to William and Bena (Aeilts) Herding. She moved with her family to Hadley in 1936. She was confirmed in the Hadley Lutheran Church, attended country school in Hadley and then Slayton High School. She moved to Worthington where she worked at Campbell’s Soup. She moved to California briefly in 1956, returned to Worthington where she worked at Tom’s Produce, Band Box Dry Cleaning and various other jobs. On July 9, 1958, she married Randy Griffith in Sioux Falls, SD. This marriage ended in divorce in 1983. She was the first woman in Nobles County to have a chauffer’s license and she drove a semi with Randy in the early 1960’s. She drove a route to various towns in the area for the Minneapolis Star and Tribune. She then started driving school bus for Kempema Bus Co for over 30 years. During this time she also helped with the family business, Worthington Snowmobile Sales and Service. On January 11, 1986, she married Val Hromatko in Worthington, MN. She worked at the Old Home Bread Store before moving on to drive charter bus for Reading Bus Lines. After Val passed away, she moved to The Meadows for 4 years before going to Crossroads Care Center in February 2013. She passed away April 26, 2014 at Crossroads Care Center. She was a member of the Worthington Christian Church for over 50 years. She enjoyed hot rods, riding and driving motorcycles, camping with her family. She raced snowmobiles and stock cars. She loved to play cards with friends and family. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting and quilting. The true loves of her life were her family. She followed her grandkids to all of their racing and sporting events and then her great grandchildren in all of their activities.

      Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Butch (Kathy) Herding, Hadley, MN, DeAnn (Jeff) Carlson, Slayton, MN, and Linda Griffith, Worthington; three grandchildren, Chad (Sarah) Griffith, Brewster, MN, Jason (Tami) Gerhard, Worthington, MN, and Ashley (Tim) Thorman, Crystal, MN; three great-grandchildren, Kasey Gerhard, Nick Griffith and McKenzie Gerhard; two sisters, Joyce (Dick) Johnson, Hadley, MN and Joan (Phil) Petersen, Northfield, MN, and many nieces and nephews.

      She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Val, three infant sons, brothers Eugene (Bud) Herding, Dennis Herding, Dale (Son) Herding, and Curt Herding and stepson Larry Hromatko.

      Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at the Worthington Christian Church, with Pastor Doug White officiating. Pallbearers will be Chad Griffith, Jason Gerhard, Tim Thorman, Matt Petersen, Randy Griffith, and John Nelson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Kasey Gerhard, Nick Griffith and McKenzie Gerhard. Burial will be in the Worthington Cemetery.

Visitation will held on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington and also one hour prior to service on Wednesday at the church.
