Obituary for Marcella Mildred Winter

Worthington, MN

Marcella Mildred Winter, 93, Worthington, died peacefully on Monday, June 29, 2015 at Sanford Worthington Medical Center.

She was born January 14, 1922 in Ewington Township, Jackson County, daughter of the late Walter G. and Gertrude (Frey) Bayerkohler. On September 23, 1939 she married Victor Winter at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Worthington. He preceded her in death on August 28, 1977.

Marcella and Vic raised six children, starting their married life on the Clifford Knapp turkey farm near Worthington. Three children were born while they lived on the farm. Three more were born after they moved to Worthington. Through the years, Marcella worked at Campbell Soup Company, and later at the Holiday Inn, all while raising her family.

Marcella was known as a great baker and cook. For many years, she baked bread, buns, cinnamon rolls, and pies. She sold her baked goods for a little extra spending money. Family members, both close and extended, knew they would receive a good meal at Vic and Marcella’s house.

Many of those meals included vegetables from her garden, which she took great pride in maintaining. But gardening was one of just a few hobbies. She also sewed beautiful clothing and was asked often for help with a sewing project. In her later years, she enjoyed crafts and watching and feeding birds.

She was happy with her large family, which soon grew to include grandchildren and great grandchildren. Throughout the years, she supported her family the best she could, and served as a role model for all with a smile, kiss and hug.

Besides her parents and husband Vic, she was preceded in death by her daughters Judy Grimmius, Janice Schroer and Carol Bourquin, her son Ronald and son-in-law Randy Grimmius. She was also preceded in death by her sisters: Bertha Mathews, Fern Graff and Mary Klooster, and brothers: Donald, Alfred, Floyd and Darold.

Survivors include her children, Barb (Del) Uphoff, Worthington, Randy (Anne), Wausau, Wisconsin, sons-in-law Harvey Bourquin (friend Kathy), John Schroer and daughter-in-law Janice Winter. Marcella is survived by all 17 of her grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and 16 great, great-grandchildren.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 3, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Worthington. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Worthington. Friends may call Thursday, July 2, 2015, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Benson Funeral Home.

The family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to the medical staff at Sanford Medical Center, and the staff at Crossroads Care for the loving care and compassion given to Marcella.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
